Short water pump vs. long?
Ok, so I the PO put a long water pump on the 350 but left the short pump accessory brackets. I now have a mismatch of short and long brackets and the power steering pump is not aligned right (you can see the spacers the PO made).
I also got rid of the stock A/C and want to change the pulleys. Should I get a short water pump or change all the brackets for the long pump? Thanks. Last edited by KAILUAZ; 03-12-2007 at 09:45 AM. |

Re: Short water pump vs. long?
I made the mistake of putting a long pump on my 69. Getting the right brackets is a real pain. To get the power steering right, you need a pump, bracket and pulley from a 73 & on. If I had it to do over I would put on the short pump.
I did get my original ps pump to work, but I cannot run AC with the setup. I turned the pulley around and milled the hub nipple down until the belt lined up.

Re: Short water pump vs. long?
KAILUAZ IMO your making the right choice. Since you have that pump. It would seem to me that the newer long water pump brakets are easier to find because they are simply newer but, the old ones are out there and thats what your truck should have on it anyway. Good Luck with the parts seach. RJ22

Re: Short water pump vs. long?
you have the passenger side alternator bracket which is setup for a long pump. you will have to find the drivers side alternator bracket and the correct water pump pulley in order to use a short water pump.it also looks like you have the factory crank pulley though and that the alternator is getting slowly eaten up by it.basically at this point you might as well flip a coin to make a decision because you have so much mismatched stuff. either way its going to be a pita unless you find a complete bracket set

Re: Short water pump vs. long?
So I will need the driver side alt mounting brackets and short water pump and new pulley. I should then be able to use the stock crank pulley and current alt/p.s. pulleys? I can then use stock belts?
Someone have a pic of the stock setup with headers? Thanks. Last edited by KAILUAZ; 03-13-2007 at 05:49 PM. |

Re: Short water pump vs. long?
Just look at the timing cover....if it's really tight ti the water pump then you have a short neck. If it's about 1" from the timing cover then it's the long neck.
Most trucks got the long neck from factory, and the corvettes and sports cars where the short neck for clearence issues Duro |

Re: Short water pump vs. long?
I didn't have a swp small block to set this up on so I just took a couple of pics to show you what the original alternater brackets look like for your 70 GMC. This is to the best of my knowledge what you should have with a short water pump.

Re: Short water pump vs. long?
Now im doing the opposite and having clearance issues with tall valve covers with having the altenator on the drivers side. But to switch pulleys over to the newer style set up i have to change over to long neck pump, will this cause radiator to fan clearance issues???
