I finally am done with my emission testing

This my ending story about my emissions problem with my Chevy 83 truck

I took my truck in the other day for the third try at passing emissions ,, he put the stinger in the tail pipe and when the guy wanted the hood open to hook the machine up to my spark plug,, the cable jumped out of its place and the hood wouldn't open,,So,, back home to get the hood open...

I went back the next day and FAILED the test ,,so now I have filed for a year's waiver and got it (I think) and that will take me up to next July 1st when all testing in Idaho will be no more . I am one month short on my year waver ,,but the kind lady in control of all this told me she will take care of me for the the that last month ,,no worries ...

It took around a hour and half to get the hood open ,,,,,. The end where the cable it hooks to the latch came off and therefore when I pulled the handle it wouldn't unlatch the hood.. I finally got a old metal coat hanger bent to a half circle about the size of a volley ball along with a hooked end and got it hooked to the release latch and got it open .it hooked to everthing let me tell ya ..

I had to run the wire into the small crack between the hood and the radiator support around the big spring that is hooked to the hood and on to the latch ,finally with hard pull the hood popped up.All this is done by not seeing ,,just feeling one's way through the crack around the hood spring and onto the latch release..

Whew? sure was nice to hear that POP UP Sound Any of you had a situation like this that seemed for the first 30 minutes impossible but in this case after much bending of the wire and re-inserting it did work. ?

Re: I finally am done with my emission testing

Yeah, on just about every Chevy or GMC I've had with hood release. Never had a cable completely fail, but who doesn't know the ole bump the hood edge just right to get it to pop up routine?

Glad your '83 made it through the muck it was stuck in

Re: I finally am done with my emission testing

Mine was not trigger happy guys ,,I tried the hood bump for just long enough to quit trying ..mine has hardly any play in it,, maybe I should adjust it with more play ,,NO ! ,, not going to that,, I have fixed my latch cable to where it will not be a problem again..

Glad to hear that you finally got out of "Smog Prison'. I've done a little time there myself. What an ordeal.

Not by a long shot. I've been dragged through the mud a few times.

Re: I finally am done with my emission testing

Here in Ontario Canada our Government tried the emission testing scam , many garages installed the big $$$$ device to do the testing and then a year later our Government scraped the idea and the garages were out their money .
Most people had tricks on how to get their vehicle to pass anyways.

Re: I finally am done with my emission testing

This guy I know
He changed his drivers license and tag registration,
To a county that didn't require emissions.

Now my county doesn't require it anymore.

I heard that he changed his license and registration back to the correct address

My wife called that guy a Crook.

Wait who's the real crook here

I thought about it but didnt want to foul up my identification on my license to use for other things ,,..I would rather by far to do what the law says ,,but the next thing I would have to do to pass emissions would go buy all smog stuff that is not on my truck that bought recently and install it all OR Sell it .. probably sell it ,but now if they do away with it , I'll keep it

I'm curious, is that because the law is changing for everybody in every vehicle, or the law provides for trucks like yours that are going over a cutoff in age, 40 years?

Right now ,,two counties in the state of Idaho has emission testing ,,they are the two most populated counties ,, On July 1st 2023 the State is discontinuing emission testing . I would assume that if the air gets bad again that they probably would start requireing emission testing again . I am guessing this as the two counties has in he last 10 years added newcomers who has moved into the state in these two counties (again I am guessing for a number ) some 50-75 thousand people,,or more

Re: I finally am done with my emission testing

I always either drove the older trucks or diesels and neither get tested. I'm glad I never had to deal with it. When I was married my wife drove newer stuff that always passed.

I think Davidson is the only county in TN that still has to deal with (The Test).

We don't have it here in a metro area of over 1 million people, never have.

I would of thought that Tenn would of been all exempt ,

I bet the guy here taking the tests maybe gets $15 an hour and they charge $14 per test,, wonder how much the state gets ? A vehicle does not get tested until it is 5 years old ,, there are 693,363 people in the 2 counties that they test for emissions in Idaho

Re: I finally am done with my emission testing

You're getting off easy. When I was a smog mechanic, we got $50 for a test (back in the early '80s) and ANY missing equipment had to be replaced. If I had passed a vehicle with equipment missing and got caught, I could be fined and imprisoned.

I have been to Simi Valley And a train runs through it.. anyways it did when I was there a few years ago .. With the Calif rules on emissions I would of had to sold my truck and took the train..

Re: I finally am done with my emission testing

But.............you still have an issue with the engine not running correctly and burning an excess amount of fuel. It's all about gas mileage at the moment, unless you're going to park it 90%

You are absolutely right .. I am going to take the truck to a shop and get a compression test on all cylinders and have them let me know the test results and if all is ok with that I will have them put new header gaskets and valve cover gaskets on ,.,also tune the carburetor and check out my AC ''Should be good to go after all this ..
