Flaming River Column Disassembly

I trying to disassemble the flaming river column mounted in my 70 C10, to get shifter lever spring out that dropped inside the housing.

I'm to this point in the tear down and can get no further. I removed the pin that was in the upper right hand corner and two allen screws where the circles are and and with a gear puller I can't get it to budge more than maybe 1/2".

Do I need to disconnect the steering shaft, am I missing something here or have I totally screwed up?

Thanks

Re: Flaming River Column Disassembly

You don't need a puller for removing anything.. I hope you haven't damaged something.. At 3:00 and 9:00 are 2 pins about 5/8" diameter.. The one at 9:00 is shown in your picture just above the opening for the T/S switch harness.. The pins are the pivot for the tilt, and are pressed in.. A tool is available for removing these pins.. Remove these pins and the aluminum housing lifts off, leaving the upper shaft in place.

Here's a link to that tool:

Re: Flaming River Column Disassembly

Thanks for the information, I just ordered one.
With the way my luck has been lately, I probably screwed up the housing and will have to order a new one. I'll know mid next week.

Thanks again

Most of the aftermarket steering columns, both "rigid" and tilt, are based on the GM column.. You can reference a Factory Service Manual for guidance on repairs..
