Re: Electrical help

what size breaker are you going to be using, because 10 gauge wire is really only rated to 30amps. I would go with 6 gauge wire up 50 amps.

Anyway, so you have your wire and its actually 10-3 the ground does not get counted as a wire. there is a red sheathed wire a black one and a white one.

shut off your main breaker it is usually at the top.

you first want to put your breaker in and make sure its in the off position the black and the red are your conductor wires and the get hooked to the breaker. one on on each side doesnt matter you choose of it strip abour a half inch of sheathing off them and insert them into th breaker lug. the white wire is the nuetral wire and it gets hooked into the nuetral bus bar inside your panel (look for the the rest of the whites in your panel) and then the ground gets hooked to the groung bus bar.

thats it, let me know if you have any other questions.

Re: Electrical help

My shop has 6-3 running to it and the manual for the welder says a minimum of 10ga wire. I have some 6-3 left from wiring so I might use that. Welder is a Hobart 230. The powercord on the unit itself is 12-3 so that's why I wondered if 10 would be ok.

Re: Electrical help

technically 10 gauge wire can carry a current up to 40 amps, but as a rule of thumb I have always used and was taught is 10 guage is 30 amps 12 gauge is 20 amps 14 gauge is 15 amps they can all carry a rating of amperage but if you wire this way it is hard to ever overload the wire.

you can get away with 10 but if you already have the 6 i would use that that way you can run pretty much anything on that circuit.

Re: Electrical help

Well I dont have alot of 6 ga wire so Ill have to move my outlet plan. I was wanting to do two drops but I cant afford to buy more 6-3. I think I only have about 25 ft left.
