20x9 front wheels

I am looking to run a 20x9 front wheel with a 245/40/20 and a 20x12 rear wheel with a 315/35/20 on my 49 truck. The rear is not a problem but the front I am concerned about with rubbing. I am running a TCI Mustang ll with drop spindles and air ride. I really need some input on this. Has anyone run this 20x9 front wheel and what offset is used?

Re: 20x9 front wheels

I'm running a 22x9 with a 5.50 BS with some 5/8 shorter tubular control arms. The wheels fit in there pretty well cause I have rubberbands for tires and the control arms suck the wheels away from the fenders. That's going to be the biggest issue is your choice of tire I believe. If you go with some crazy backspace on the wheels that'll be another issue to contend with...

I have 20 x 8.5 on a modified G-body frame that is bagged. I'm running the same tire size you listed. I can't turn lock to lock due to rubbing but it is not that big of a deal.

Re: 20x9 front wheels

What is the back spacing or offset on the 20 x 8.5?
Are the control arms stock?
Do you happen to know the hub to hub detention? If not what year front clip did you use so I can look it up.
Thanks.

Backspacing - 5"
Stock control arms
Front clip - 1982 to 1988 (I think)

Re: 20x9 front wheels

Hey Marc,
Where is yours rubbing??

Heres what I found. Hopefully this will help someone else looking to use 20 x 8, 8.5 or 9 front wheels
The 78-88 G body front clip is 58-1/2 hub to hub
The 47-55 1st series Chevy truck is 58-1/4-1/2
My 49 3/4 ton is 58-1/8 hub to hub 8 lug
TCI's mustang ll , air ride 2" drop spindles, wilwood 11" slotted/drilled rotors and Dynalite calipers are 56-1/2" hub to hub

Thanks again,
John

I'm running after market inner fenders by b*itch*n products and hey rub on the inside of the inner fenders but I bet if you ran the stock ones would offer more room for the wheel. It only really comes into play when turning sharp pulling into a parking spot.

Re: 20x9 front wheels

Yeah but it still sucks if the inner fenders are as nice as the paint job on the truck. That would drive me crazy. I'd pull the aftermarket one out and modify them so it wouldn't rub. So with your 20x8.5 having a 5" backset is the same as +6 mm offset. So if run a +20 mm offset which is 5.8" backset on my 20x9 wheels it will not stick out further but will be in about 1/2" or +14 mm more. If it rubs the inner fender itwill definitely be easier to fix than the outer fender. Man I hope this works

yea mine is really not that big or a deal. There are usually going to be comprimisses to run a 20" + rim and still drive low. I think most people you see lowered over big rims cant turn lock to lock. Again driving down the road I never feel its and issue. It is just those times when I need to turn tight into a parking spot.

If you want to be absolutely sure you should buy the measuring tool from Summit Racing $70. It takes the guess work out, this is what I did and I ended up with all 4 wheels 20 x 9 with 5" back spacing which is a 0 offset and my tires do not rub turning lock to lock of course my truck is not bagged and the highest part in the middle of my wheel well is about 25" to the ground. Most of the bagged trucks are around 22" to 23" to the ground from the wheel well so rubbing when turning lock to lock is just the nature of having it bagged. Good luck

takes all the guesswork out
