WTB - 1960 GMC rating plate

Mine is missing.

It's this one, but the one for the 1960 will be slightly different (engine type)...

Thanks!

Re: WTB - 1960 GMC rating plate

I'll check if I have one. I know some of the 1960 GMC's had the VIN number on that plate.. Is yours a 1/2 ton truck or ?

It is a 1/2 ton truck, SWB. My vin/serial is on the A pillar.

Thanks for checking 1960cp!

Re: WTB - 1960 GMC rating plate

if your VIN is not stamped in the rating plate, your truck is a 61 up instead of a 60 regardless of what the title says. Many trucks were titled in the year sold rather than the year model they actually were - I have never seen a true 1960 GMC that did not have a single tag for VIN and rating.

Lets see if the 6066 crowd agrees or argues with me on my assertion that 1960 was the last year of the VIN being on the kick panel tag - not sure if those guys have weighed in yet. If they agree, then the kick panel type all-in-one tag is what your 1960 needs.

Re: WTB - 1960 GMC rating plate

well in this case if his vin is on the door jamb he won't want a kick panel tag with a vin on it.. do you know the gvw for a shortbed off the top of your head?

My serial # plate says Max. GVW 5200 and my serial # ends in an 'A' which I believe means 6000 lbs or less.

I have a 305A engine in my truck as well, which I believe is the 305 v6 that was in all 1960 GMC 1000 series.

I believe it will look something like this, but with 305A and slightly different HP ratings on it.

This rating plate may not exist without a serial # on it though. I really don't know.
I appreciate you looking though. ;-)

Oh man....don't start over there. I started a thread over there and a special fellow chimed in, not realizing things could have been variable as far as locations of ID plates.

He basically told me that my truck was 'fishy' and could be a clone and that I was trying to pull a fast one on the sheriff's office while trying to get a bonded title. Ugh.

Thankfully other, more seasoned members set him straight.

Oh, I see you're already posting over there too.

Nevermind...you know what's going on over there too ;-)

Re: WTB - 1960 GMC rating plate

I found a couple so far, but both are 305E. I'll keep looking.

Interesting though, I checked 4 different 60-61 trucks and they didn't have any kick panel tags - just the holes. So yours may not be missing - it might not have come with one, especially if all the data info is already on the pillar.

Hahahaha - you will never find a more testy group of so-called truck enthusiasts than in that 6066 GMC V6 group - they are all just waiting to get a new opportunity to start a pissing contest or prove someone else is wrong about an asserted fact they thought they knew. Most online forum moderators try to squash use of negative talk or criticism but not that one....sorry you have to tread lightly around that crowd. Your truck is A-OK with a door mounted tag, its just not a 1960. Its a N series 61

Re: WTB - 1960 GMC rating plate

Pirate, I forgot - maybe you are the one saying your truck didn't have a tag at all - forgot that. So to be a 60 you need a kick panel 1960 tag w/ 1000 series VIN and if you are wanting a 61-62 identity tag, that is on the door frame and is a skinny tag that rivets to the two holes you found there

My truck does have a tag, it's just on the A-Pillar. I have noticed that there are kickpanel tags as well, that don't have the serial #, but it looks like my truck probably never had one since all of the rating information is on the A-pillar tag.

I was just trying to make my truck complete is all, but it seems it is...those holes in the kickpanel must have always been vacant.

Thanks for looking everyone!

I'm on that forum to "TJ's GMC." lol I've been bull headed over there, but our moderator there tends to punish the victims instead of the predators. One of the members there decided to start an argument with me so I defended myself. Next thing I know I get a nasty PM from that mod and the idiot that started the whole thing is going along freely. haha Oh well. Doesn't bother me. Glad I'm on this forum where the mods are fair people who work hard to make this place great for Everyone and not just a select few.

Re: WTB - 1960 GMC rating plate

Steve , out of four 1960-1961 trucks I have , two 60s two 61s , three have the kick panel vin and one has the A pillar VIN. I have three 1962s , all have the A pillar VIN like the one 1961 does. NONE of the A pillar 1961 1962 VIN trucks have kick panel GVW tags . 1963 GMC has the normal GVW tag on the kick panel and then they changed the VIN tag to a spot welded stainless tag like Chevys. Theres nothing wrong with your truck Angrypirot , but there is a real lack of understanding over at the GMC site ! WOW!

I have a similar GMC VIN screw up. Its a 1966 GMC 4x4 panel with very low miles. Heres the problem, the VIN tag style is the same as a 1964-1965 tag, the vin tag style changed in 1966 . Everything on this truck is dated for a 1964 production model year. The tag was never removed , but like Steve is saying , GMC titled the truck the year the truck was sold. This truck of mine has 6000 original miles and was built for Civil Defense , that is most likely why it was titled so late as a 66. The "geniuses" over at the GMC sites first response is the tag and title are not to the truck ! What ? I buy it from the original owner township that bought it NEW in 1966 and the VIN got changed ? Theres a couple of egotistical idiot know it all's over there that are afraid to LEARN anything new and you cant tell them theyre wrong when they are . I used to go there quite often , not anymore. THE OLD 6066GMC site has some great info posted though.

Thanks for the information about your experiences with ID tags and ratings plates.

That information site attached to the 6066GMC site is pretty great, but one of the "know it all's" over there didn't want to admit he was wrong, so he said the information site was incorrect and he was right. UNREAL.

Oh well....it appears my 60 GMC may actually be a 61. At least some good information was arrived at on both sites forums around the ID plates.

Re: WTB - 1960 GMC rating plate

I read through that post on the other site front to back. My question is , what made you think its a 1960 vs a 1961 ? When researching my 1966, that's actually a 1964 build , I checked all the dates on the engine , intake , heads block etc , were all dated for a 1964 production truck. Im using the dates like anyone would restoring a car. It might help you figure it out ?

Well, the guy I bought it from told me it was a 1960, but the date code ('N') on the serial # says it could be either 60 or 61. It could still be either but it seems like some are leaning more towards it being a 61.

My 61's data plate location. I'll have to look at my date stamped parts to see what I may really have .
