1965 C20 Dump truck
This is a 1965 c10 that my Uncle built into a c20 dump truck.
The cab and frame is all that is original (the doors, hood and every thing else is from other trucks) My Dad got it from my Uncle some time around early 2001 and then gave it to my brother a short time later. Now I have it. The truck has been used for a farm truck off and on since we got it. It was parked from 2012 until I got it going some time last year. 292 straight 6 with 4 speed on the floor. Long list of things I plan on and need to do to it in the near future (including fixing the non working dump bed) So stay tuned! |

The plan is for now to just get it running real good and then maybe later on I'll add some mods to it.
I do like what you did to yours. |

Re: 1965 C20 Dump truck
I know its not the right carb for the engine but there was one just like this on it when we got it.(This one is off my 76 c10)
this carb is working for now but it needs to be rebuilt or replaced before I can get the truck on the road. So here is my question: Can I use this carb on this engine or do I need to get the original one for it. All so the vac. advance is not hooked up, not shore if I can with this carb I have now. Some input would be welcome.

Re: 1965 C20 Dump truck
So after reading my last post today I realize that I may need to clarify a few things.
I have 2 carburetors, both are the same. One came with the truck when we got it. The 2nd one came off the engine in a 76 c10. I know that these carbs are not the original kind for my engine. I know the rockchester B is the original carb for these engines. Obviously the engine runs with this carb My Uncle drove the truck on the road with one. So my question is: Has anybody else used this type of carb on these engines. And is there any advantage or disadvantage of using these over the rockchester B. I know this is most likely a stab in the dark but just thought I'd ask. Thanks, and happy new year!

Re: 1965 C20 Dump truck
So here is a short list of things I have done to the truck in the past 2 years.
Replaced a valve lifter & push rod on the engine. Replaced the left rear wheel cylinder. Installed new amp,oil pressure and water temp gauges. (smoked old ammeter)(that's another story) Replaced a bunch of wiring. Cleaned out mouse nest in heater blower housing. Started installing new wood on the truck bed.(Not finished) I'm sure I'm forgetting something but that's most of it.

Re: 1965 C20 Dump truck
Can't wait to see what all you do with it, hard to tell in pics but is it still 6 lug up front? I know you had said he converted it to a c20 and can see rear hubs but wasnt sure if he switched front out too or not. If not do you plan to make it 8 lug all around and any plans on wheel-tire combo you might be going with?
Side note.. I really wish GMC would have used same dash as the chevy's, I like the symmetrical design they have in both the double bump dash and your style. |

Re: 1965 C20 Dump truck
Yep it's got 8 lugs all the way around.
Not really sure about the wheels yet I kinda like the look of the mud tires on the back but I don't know if I will keep it that way. Yea nothing really wrong with the gmc dash but I kinda like the chevy dash a little bit more. I plan on getting more done once the winter is over and the weather starts warming up. I don't have a shop and I hate working in the rain LOL! I have some pictures of when I was rebuilding the bed I have been meaning to post on here sometime. I will all so try to explain whats wrong with the dump bed sometime to.

Re: 1965 C20 Dump truck
Well the other day we had some good weather so I decided to take off the valve cover to adjust the valves.
That's when I ran into some problems. So my problem is I have coolant leaking up through one of the valve cover bolt holes in the head. Even with the bolt screwed in coolant is still leaking past the bolt threads and getting ware it shouldn't be.... Not good. I think I can take care of the problem one way or another but I just wanted to ask if anybody else has had this problem before.

Re: 1965 C20 Dump truck
Not sure if this would work or not, but have you tried using some sort of thread sealant? I used Permatex thread sealant on my engine when I had some bolts that needed sealing and it has worked out great for me. Also used the stuff on my Dakota and have not had any issues with the sealant in just over 7000 miles

Re: 1965 C20 Dump truck
I have not used actual thread sealant but I have used some gasket maker around ware the
valve cover seals and that did not really work but sealing the actual bolt threads might work. I may have to try it. Thanks for the suggestion!

Re: 1965 C20 Dump truck
Well for starters, I got the valve/rocker cover back on. I did use the suggested thread sealant on the bolt that had the coolant leaking past the threads. I'm pretty sure it should work but time will tell.
All so I'm going to run some stop leak in the coolant system just for added safety.

Re: 1965 C20 Dump truck
The next thing I did was rebuild the carburetor.
All so the fuel filter in the carb. was gummed up real bad witch explains why It didn't start real well or have as much power as I was thinking it should. THE TRUCK RUNS MUCH MUCH BETTER NOW! I still have to fine tune the carb. a little bit and I need to re gap the points but overall the truck runs way better than it did for sure.
