Sub box/audio questions
I'm going to build a speaker box for behind the seat. I'm thinking an 8" or 10" but space is limited. I was wondering how deep are the speakers 8 or 10"?
I'm building my box, hopefully once ![]() |

Re: Sub box/audio questions
Honestly, they vary alot. They have slim subs that take up much less room that a regular sub for shallow mount needs. Do a search and you'll find a very wide range of depths. Good luck.

Re: Sub box/audio questions
I built an ok looking box. I bought a sheet of 3/4 inch MDF and took some simple measurements... The box has 2 6x9s on each side of a 8" subwoofer... it sounds pretty good. It sure does sound better with the seat folded forward. The seat muffles a lot of the quality. I have a 600 watt amp that is put in its own section of the box, with a separator between the amp section and the speaker section... It was fun to build. It's coated in rubberized undercoating. Here's a pic.

Re: Sub box/audio questions
Well I've cut up some materials to frame up a box. It's going to cover the full width of the back of the cab. The wife asked if I was going to build in storage
![]() ![]() I found a speaker laying around so I'm going to use it as a guide and may use it as it fits the plan so far. My question is now should I beaf up the center woofer area more on the front surface area or will glassing the 1/4 ply be sufficient? I know more is better but when do I say when. Re: Sub box/audio questions
no dont use ply wood. bad idea. use MDF board it dont cost much but its the ideal material for building boxs. something about mdf board allowing air to move... just dont use plywood its a waste of time. the frame u got is fine. just put the back on then chalk the inside of the box. remember to put some kind of gasket where the speaker meets the box. most speackers have one made on it. otherwise it will clap

Re: Sub box/audio questions
Looks like it would be fine, especially if some of the screws holding the sub to the box can get screwed into the side supports.

Re: Sub box/audio questions
If it is 1/4" it is too thin no matter what you are using. Using 3/4" MDF would be best. You mentioned glassing it, what is the plan for that?

Re: Sub box/audio questions
The idea of framing sealing and glassing it would be to stop any vibration the same as the partical board. This way it will be light, moisture resistant and sturdy. I plan in insullating the interior of the box and as you see the curved ends to fit snugly to the back of the cab. Utilizing as much sealed speaker space as possible. The side speakers will have a smaller area and the drivers side will also hold the head unit so I will have no dash unit. Most of the new decks now are remote so why look at it? I'm reall not interested in CDs so a thumb drive or Ipod is the way to go. On top of all that the wife can't change the station (I hate elevator music)

Re: Sub box/audio questions
i'd contact the maker of the speaker/check website at least
some sound better in a box made for them(air space) some need a port, some work open don't bother with plywood,MDF for sure....think mine was 5/8th used wood glue on all inside seems, like caulking with counter sunk screws... almost twenty years still holding up,mine r 10s make sure to get grill covers....

Re: Sub box/audio questions
Yes, definitely MDF for the subbox material. There's something about the acoustic properties of the material, it absorbs vibration better or something like that. I've used 3/4 birch plywood before as well, I was told once that either would do just fine. However most used MDF.
Most subs come with recommended enclosure dimensions, if you google the make/model of the sub then you should be able to find what you're looking for. I've used JL audio subs in a few vehicles and they have a .pdf of the installation instructions available from their site that shows everything you'd want to know about building a box. |

This is a ported box for 2 JL 8s we are putting in my sons truck as we speak. Had it in another and it sounded damn good.

Especially how the subs are low and somewhat protected. I had a pair of 10's behind the seat in my 80 RCSB. I'm long legged, with the seat all the way back the subs self-destructed very quick. They were hitting the back of the seat and destroyed the cone surround. Posted via Mobile Device

I like the design but I would rather have the subs on the out side in stead of the middle since the seat muffles the subs SQ btw have any of you used bazooka tubes in your single cab trucks? I had some 8's in one of my single cab trucks and they rocked was not much of a differents between those and the 12's i had in the same truck just thought I'd mention it |

Re: Sub box/audio questions
Well I got some more cut out for the skeleton of the speaker box. I can counter sink in the MDF panels. Couple of things I don't get. Many are making custom speaker enclosures from glass in door and kick panels. Why can't I do it for a sub box in the back with the same results? I can seal it up tighter than a frogs azz and support it well enough to stop any vibrations.
I'm held up right now due to cash flow issues (Wife has made plans for an Alaska trip). I can't fab in a radio head that I don't have. |

Re: Sub box/audio questions
Nothing wrong with building a fiberglass box but you still need the proper foundation. I assume you intend to glass the front of your box to give it some shape. Don't glass the back side, a big flat piece of fiberglass isn't going to be very strong. Instead you need to make the back panel out of wood as well. The box will work with the wood you have used, it just wasn't the best choice.

Re: Sub box/audio questions
you can make the box from what ever materials you choose fiberglass, lexan & Etc.. 3/4 inch MDF is the number one choice for custom boxes because its known to take the abuse from the subwoofers and when built right does not rattle, flex or make noises so sound quality is really good
1/4 inch plywood is just not the best to use if you are after sound quality any thing for that matter 1/4 inch should not be used, the box your making can be made out of one 4x8 sheet of 3/4" MDF you can make a box out of plywood and brace it to be really strong but you will be loosing internal air space and your subwoofer might not preform well |
