Truck Weight

I found a paper in my truck from a few years ago when I went to a car show and wieghted the truck on a Highway Scale. With me, my wife and couple of suitcases in the truck box it weighted 2882 pounds on the front tires and 1914 pounds on the rear tires for a total of 4796 pounds. I didnt realize out trucks were that heavy and that is one of the reasons it is hard to get good gas mileage from our trucks, especially with original drivetrains in them.

Interesting.....is your truck a 1/2 ton or 3/4 ton?
Its a little deceiving for sure and what makes it tough to call is almost every truck is a different weight on a truck by truck basis. The base weight they list in the GM brochures etc (something in the 3600lb range? or?) is for a base model 1/2 ton with a base model engine (6cyl) with no options. Of course the weight starts to climp up from there w/ a V-8, ps/pb, deluxe trim...and a/c and an 8' bed, etc you are quickly tickling 4000lbs+
I've had a few 1/2 long beds w/ 350's and a good option group.
What I've found is the trucks w/ me in them tend to range from 4100lbs to 4400lbs empty.
I've even tried this weight check by making sure the spare tire isn't in the truck (LOL) and keeping track of how much gas is in them. They've never been under 4000lbs....and that is a pretty heavy vehicle to start with relatively speaking.
Another thing I found was that the 1/2 ton that I had with the leaf springs vs. the trailing arms was a little less weight....which makes sense. It also made the true payload capacity of the leaf spring truck higher by a combination of less truck weight and more ability to carry weight.

A 1970 Hemi GTX is right at 4000lbs too. 4000lbs. is way lighter than todays trucks. Remember that a new Mustang is around 3800, so its all relative.

My truck is a long wheelbase C10 with a big block and Turbo 400 trans and being a Chevy had trailing arms. Of the 4796 Lbs me, mom and the suitcase was probably 450 of it which would bring it down to about 4350 dry weight.

4000 lbs isn't to bad really. A dodge 3500 diesel mega cab weighs in over 8100 lbs.

Yeah, thats sound right in there with the info I got out out of the weigh stations, etc. Is yours an a/c truck?
Its funny how another 'option' in these trucks immediately adds 30lbs, 50lbs 100lbs....even a unsuspecting 'overload' spring option adds another 75lbs or a new set of oversize tires/rims.
I had a small 8' O.head camper that we used to have and we put the whole unit over the scales once when we were heading out on our holidays. I think the whole unit (1/2ton, us, camper, bikes, propane, supplies,etc) came in at around 6100lbs...which was about 700lbs more than the original GVW rating....oh well, no problems...those old GVW plates need updating anyways (LOL).
By comparison and like Syndromes info shows I took my '05 Silverado Diesel over the scales completely dry (2500HD Ext Cab/shortbox 4x4) over the scales....and it was 6800lbs...dry....LOL. Basically 700lbs more than my 1/2 ton and a complete camper/RV setup.
New vehicles are full of weight...leather, harnesses, gizmos everywhere, insulation,....more than they sometimes look like they weigh.

My 72 blazer without the top on was around 4100 lbs. 4350 with top and now around 4600 with 3/4 ton axles. For reference my 67 impala fastback was 5200. So it ain't too bad. Newer truck are heavier but use lighter guage steel. Funny how much the interior pieces and all that add up.

The GM historical Center lists Shipping weights for the 67's (fully assembled, no fluids) as follows:

I have a 71 C20 Longhorn and I weighed it the other week and it came in at 4900 lbs. I have a 65 gallon tank that was full and I have a 350/4L80E and a Dana 60 Axle.

My 2003 Duramax CCSB 2WD came in at 7100 lbs with my toolbox and some other gear in it.

I am going to go back to a Highway Scale and weigh her again. I post the results in this thread. I wonder if weighing ( like I did ) the front and rear axles seperately skewered the actual weight.

My '68 swb step side with a 5.3L/4L60E weighed 4150 with me in it. I go 250lbs so that puts the truck at 3900lbs.

Those shipping weights are based on 6 cyl, 3 spd, very low optioned trucks dry with no fluids. V8's, auto trans, and all other options add weight.

A big block fully dressed with pulleys, iron intake, manifolds, brackets, and the A/C set-up that most of them have weighs about 300# more than a stock250 6 cyl. A TH400 weighs around 20# more than a TH350 (wet) and a TH350 weighs about 20# more than PG.

Me in it, full tank of gas, tool kit under the seat, it comes in at 4320. I'm 400 of it, so the truck is right at 3900. I had expected it to be heavier.

Thats on the truck scale at work, which weighs in 20 lb increments and gets calibrated once a month.

That is correct and, none of those differences can make a C-10 weigh 4796 LBS as the original poster claimed. Your C-30 won't even be close to that number.

Sounds about right. My '72 K20 weighed 5300# with me in it (about 140), a wraparound diamond-plate rear bumper, and no clue how much gas but it'll hold 50 gallons. This was many years ago on certified scales.

I weighed my truck today at the scrap yard, 68 short step, 5.3/4l60e swap, no bed floor, full tank of gas and me in it (205) weighed 3780.

I just weighed my 72 C20 2wd last week. With both fuel tanks full and with me in it, it weighed 5120. It has a 350 and auto trans.

Not really.
The average weight of the sampling of trucks that the members have listed here so far is just over 4300lbs.
You need to read the fine print about what those listed weights comprises a little closer (refer to 67_C30's post).

My 1972 GMC C1500 Super Custom with 350/350, me in it, tools under the seat, 1/4 tank of gas, leaf spring rear and no spare tire, came to 4,380 pounds.
