Re: Air compressor explodes.

look at the compressor. it's a toy. not rusty either. probably chinese. in all my years i've never heard of compressor explosions in auto shops. pcv pipe - yes.
there used to be a guy who sold/serviced compressors in the orlando area. he used to make water separators from marbles in a large pvc pipe. don't know if there ever where failures but THAT sounds scary to me.

Re: Air compressor explodes.

I see it's a Craftsman
which doesn't mean the tank didn't come from china
I do see that it's rusted along the bottom where it came apart.
I don't think it should have blew up like that.
I think it would've/should've split open at the rusted area expunged all its air ...end of
compressor end of story!
Seeing the end caps blown completely off like that would lead me more in the direction of faulty tank construction and/or some one jacked up the regulator, but the tank should have handled that.
I'm rebuilding one similar to that...Forney Ind. 1975 or 76.
Peeking into the tank ,these is rust but not as bad as I thought considering it has a dead plug and not a drain (I will be changing that).
After seeing that one I will be taking ultra sonic depth meter readings on how much wall is left along the bottom.
Lucky for me we use them at my work.

Re: Air compressor explodes.

I work in a power plant full of pressure vessels, receiver tanks, air storage tanks, etc. All of the tanks have welded on tags stating it's working pressure (WP) and rated temp, etc. This tag is part of a safely designed tank meeting design requirements put out from the AMERICAN SOCIETY OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERS (ALSO KNOWN ASME). No tag, Not safe in my eyes. Our power plant is 50 years old, i've drained 100's of gallons of water out of compressed tanks and never so mach as a pin hole

Re: Air compressor explodes.

I've seen the Home depot and Lowes compressors fracture at the compressor mount. They had a recall on then a few years back

This just makes me want to do this intentionally.....out to the farmlands we go.
Cmon, explosions are fun when you know they are going to happen.

Re: Air compressor explodes.

I just had the regulator rebuilt on my portable. It seems that should blow before the tank. Must have been a bad weld.

Re: Air compressor explodes.

I usually keep some air brake antifreeze in my compressor since we still use it in winter. I suppose in winter its possible that the PRV could be frozen or rusted in place or something.

Re: Air compressor explodes.

I've been thinking that an explosion blanket or enclosure might be in order for my shop. Blankets work great on transmissions, why not compressors?

On a commercial level, this company is nearby and I have been on contact with them.
