Pro flo 4 and RV cam question
Hi all,
I am about to pull the trigger on a pro Flo 4 system to replace the original Q-jet on my '86 Suburban. The engine is bone stock and only has 60,xxx original miles. I bought an RV cam awhile back, but never got around to installing it. I would like to install the new cam and pro flo 4 all at once. However, I am concerned that the pro flo system will not fire up immediately in order for me to get the RPM's up and break in the cam at first start. My question: Am I asking for trouble doing both at once? Or could I rely on the EFI system to immediately fire and run up RPM's? I really don't want to pull the intake twice if I don't have to. Thanks in advance! Cort

Re: Pro flo 4 and RV cam question
I’ve had that quandary before!
I learned the hard way that it’s better to do one thing at a time. I’d do the pro flow first. |

Re: Pro flo 4 and RV cam question
I would agree, you don't want to open two cans of worms at the same time. It should be easier to tune the Pro Flo to an engine that you already know runs smooth. Then you can throw a cam at it.

Re: Pro flo 4 and RV cam question
I would actually do the cam first. I'd break in your cam and then put the PF4 system on. You won't have to go through all the settings again or "remap" the ECU for the cam. You will only have to do it once, if you do the cam first. I have a PF4 on my truck, and there are a couple others here that do as well.

Re: Pro flo 4 and RV cam question
There's also a forum Edebrock has for almost all its parts. Do a Google search for it and you'll find it. There's lots of good info there!

Re: Pro flo 4 and RV cam question
I have PF-4 on my 85K20. I'm surprised you found somebody with a PF-4 in stock. They have been on backorder for like over a year now. Get on the Edelbrock forum and educate yourself. It's a good community.
Having run a Pro-flo for 20+ years now (started with the PF2), I wouldn't hesitate to run a new cam on a new PF4 install. On the same token, I would never waste money on a non-roller cam again. |

Re: Pro flo 4 and RV cam question
Have you thought about upgrading to roller lifters? My 87 block had provisions in the lifter valley for the brackets even though it came with flat tappets.
You can also install the retro roller kits that work with untapped blocks, Ive done that before too. Ive also installed a few Edelbrock pro Flo systems, when they fire up they either run or don't run in my experience. Just my thoughts, good luck with your project! |

We have a 86 K10 with an LM7 5.3 LS swap with a Pro Flo 4, BTR stage 3 cam and it fired right up. Edelbrock has a bunch of base tunes to get you close then you can tweak it from there. The Edelbrock forum is really excellent. |
