Re: 69 GMC "Ol' Blue"
Thank you! I appreciate the encouraging words. I'm hoping that one of these weekends will be nice enough so i can get this frame painted. On another note, my torque splitter is still on backorder.

Re: 69 GMC "Ol' Blue"
I don't typically get out and work on the truck during the week, but I decided to give it a little (and I mean little) attention. I ran over the rails one more time with 180 grit and I think the rust encapsulator, and extreme chassis black will cover it well. I also removed the tranny crossmember to prepare to move it back once I get the splitter.

Ok, so I'm probably the only one in the world that thinks this is exciting...

Hey MJ have you looked into this? A gear lever actuator with a control arm connecting the actuator & the OD unit? http://www.google.com/search?q=Gear+...w=1920&bih=965 http://www.sharpshifter.co.nz/components_cars.html These solutions are expensive!!

Re: 69 GMC "Ol' Blue"
One more idea if all else fails. Put a manual shift lever through the floor pan. Back in the day the old big trucks used this method and was referred to as a set of sticks. This would be the easiest & cheapest method I can think of to actuate the OD unit.

Thanks for the input! I'm thinking I'm going to try and go with the gear actuator method if I can find one. Luckily I work for a company that has a ton of semi's so maybe I can get one off an old rig. |

Very nice! Are those really pricey?

Re: 69 GMC "Ol' Blue"
A little over $1300 for the unit, but when you consider it's just moving the cross member back 7 1/2 inches and changing the driveshaft lengths, I don't think it's too bad. The nice part about this unit over a GV unit is 1 - it's cheaper and 2 - it will still function in 4WD. I'm going to have to make a change to the shifting mechanism so that I can shift it from a switch on the existing gear shifter (like the big-rigs do) but other than that, I'm really thinking it's going to be an easier retro than trying to put a 5 spd in. I don't know...here's hoping

Re: 69 GMC "Ol' Blue"
Yeah, it looks like it's a good idea, definitely cheaper. Does it have high low or just high?

Re: 69 GMC "Ol' Blue"
I finally have some paint on this frame!!! I started with rolling the rust encapsulator on and decided that wasn't going to fly. After some research, I found and purchased the Preval spray "gun" as I didn't really want to go through all the mess of busting out the big gun on this. I am very pleased with how well that thing worked! I didn't have to thin out the encapsulator at all, it sprayed it very well right out of the can. When I do the top coat of my Extreme Chassis black, I will probably use a real gun but I think for this base it worked out great! I still have to flip the frame and do the bottom, and a couple of the cross members with the encapsulator then topcoat.

Re: 69 GMC "Ol' Blue"
As usual your work is great. Looks real good.
I think the splitter is a very cool idea for your application..

Re: 69 GMC "Ol' Blue"
The only progress to report today was to get the remaining grease and grime off the TCase. It's now ready for one final bath, then wax and grease remover, then some paint...oh, then find all the parts and put it back together...
If it seems like I keep jumping around, that's because that's how I manage my ADD.... |

Re: 69 GMC "Ol' Blue"
Well, it's been a while since I have worked on the truck but I finally got out and finished spraying the Rust Encapsulator on the frame. I've got to say, I am pretty impressed with the Preval spray system for something like this. When it comes to the top coat, I will bust out a real gun but for the encapsulator it was awesome.
Also bought a few new toys since the last time I posted 2012 GMC Sierra 6.2L New TIG |
