Re: Severe cold weather and a white Christmas

March came in like a lamb so they're saying it's going out like a lion. I'm not saying we won't get some cold this month, but I think they could be wrong. Winter just never happened here. I did some exterior work in early November and got primed it just before a cold spell came through. I told the homeowner we were lucky to get it primed, would be spring before the paint went on. Heck, I painted it a month ago and have been pre-painting trim outside on many days since. I primed and got two coats on 1/4 round today @55*. My flower beds are ready for mulch. I've been seeing landscape contractors out mulching commercial buildings this week. I keep feeling like I need to talk to family to make Easter plans like we already should have. Weirdest winter in Maryland that I can recall

2-4 coming tonight and another 1-3 tomorrow. Is it friggen June yet????? This is the most snow I’ve seen in 10 plus years this year and it’s been fairly cold. Below zero lows about 1.5 weeks ago.

Re: Severe cold weather and a white Christmas

Here's the reason I moved to the Tennessee Valley , It's early this year And with the storm heading here today ,High winds/rain it may all be gone tomorrow ? The high today will be 74 but with all the rain we've had and gusts of wind up to 70 mph there will be a lot of power outages later today. They closed all the local schools because of this severe wind/ rain today ,.

Re: Severe cold weather and a white Christmas

I hate to say it, but you Californians need this snow. It's all about attitude. It always goes away and it's not like you're looking ahead at a whole winter of it. We had two back to back 30"+ snows in '10 in mid-February, 1 day between storms. Snow galore. It took a couple weeks and we were looking at green grass and spring on it's way

We had some snow falling today for about 15 minutes, then rain. It's raining it's butt off right now. It was around freezing at dusk but raining, no ice. They say temps go up to about 60 tonight and we'll get thunder, then cool off by morning. This weatrher is screwy like gas prices

Ah Tim, don't hate to say it -- your post is spot-on. We desperately need the water, and when this is over, we can look forward to yet another long hot dry summer. Where I live, we got more snow (14") than we typically get at one time, but not nearly as much as many other areas of the state. Supposed to be more storms starting tomorrow. I just cleared my driveway two days ago. Let 'er rip, I'll gladly take all we can get.

Re: Severe cold weather and a white Christmas

You are correct, Tim, but the snow that is coming down isn't enough to water the deep thirst that the extended drought has caused in the aquifers here in the southwest. A lot of it will go to the ocean before it has a chance to be used. Infrastructure costs would be enormous to capture enough to make a real difference. The real problem is building huge amounts of cities and industries and the attendant homes for people to work in those industries in a desert to begin with.

Re: Severe cold weather and a white Christmas

Our watershed got 500” of snow this winter. But sadly we don’t have enough dams to store it all. We’ve been releasing water to the ocean fr months already, and that will continue into the summer as it melts. 3 years of drought, then a nice wet year, but we can’t store it all.

Re: Severe cold weather and a white Christmas

A lot of snow soaks into the ground, too. Run-off makes it hard to watch so much of it flow away. But still, the more the better. I hope you all see some good rain coming into spring before the dry season sets in.

It's true Steve, second largest city in the USA sits on an environment that doesn't support high population. The nicest places to live for comfortable climate, the southwest, is land that was hard to survive on before modern technology and man-made infrastructure made it possible. The problem with that, as we all know, is in a fight between mankind and mother nature she wins. We can fight a good fight, and so far so good. But that's the core of it. Mankind is always working on ways to fight back.

We could if the powers that be made a priority of doing it. Heck they spend enough money on everything else. Why not something that actually matters? I guess that they're just too busy banning stuff and putting stupid warning labels on everything under the sun.

Re: Severe cold weather and a white Christmas

At least snow melt is gradual ground can suck it up much better than heavy rain which is just about all runoff . Rather have a couple of days of light misty 2 inch total rains than a deluge of 2 inches in a day . Which seems to be more typical of the weather these days

Re: Severe cold weather and a white Christmas

We don't have the snow fall like out west but we've had record snow. About 2 plus feet on the level. The local farmers like a slow melt so it soaks in but then it dry's out so they can start plantings.
Plow is still on the Wrangler.

Re: Severe cold weather and a white Christmas

Here in west KY it looks like cold weather is on vacation. I headed over to the farm this aft to check on things. I found 2 huge red oaks and a white oak down from the 80+ mph winds. One was across my access road. I took both saws and cut the one up across the roadway. I think I would rather have the snow.

Re: Severe cold weather and a white Christmas

The last 6 days I’ve had pneumonia real bad I was in the ER all day on Monday got there at 9 am they didn’t release me till 11pm . ER wasn’t busy at all the whole time I was there . Had me on a IV antibiotic drips two different types several rounds of inhalation therapy with Vetolin and steroids mixture. Only good thing I never needed O2 . Today is the first day I was able to go outside ,got tired real quick . Reason I pretense this is I had to get ready for a supposedly a severe Nor’easter spanning Monday through Wednesday I’m in the 2-3 zone . Glad I’ll be able to get out and plow .

Jeez Mark, sorry to hear about the pneumonia. I have experienced that myself, winter '07. I hope you are feeling strong enough to deal with all that snow getting dumped. We are on the far fringe barely getting anything, probably no accumulation. Did you cough like never before? Lose weight? I know I did, and fever

I’ve have a history of bronchitis so hard coughing isn’t anything new but the bronchitis is a dry hacking cough . This was a very wet cough so I knew it wasn’t my “norm” . I did lose weight no appetite at all and very weak . Was way worse than the Covid I had last fall .
