Re: Bubba's recycling project

Hey Bubba,

Its been a while, I hope all been well with you. I have been reading up on your hydro-boost conversion and am very excited about doing the conversion myself. As it has been a number of months since the change, Im wondering if you are still happy with it and if you would recommend it to anyone else. I am anxious about doing it and have already sourced an astro hydro-boost with master cylinder & proportioning valve.

The guy who is sell it has it priced at $150. is this a fair price? how about the power steering pump? Can we stick with our old pumps or did you need to upgrade?

Happy Holidays!

Re: Bubba's recycling project

Hi Murdoc -The hydro boost has been a really nice addition . I found at least 6 or 7 Astros at Jalopy Jungle and was out the door for 50 bucks for the master cylinder and hydro boost and the astro hoses . I spent about 75 more at NAPA to make the new hydraulic hoses, the inline filter($20) and new PS fluid so about $150 total cost of the conversion

I have had it off the road for the last two or three weeks putting in the radiator and kinda wondering how much of a problem I will have on the ice. I'll keep you posted.

The new 3 row radiator fit right in place. NAPA #284
A new top hose was required to adapt from the old 1 -1/2" water neck to the new radiator 1 -3/4" The bottom hose was re-used.

I did run into a setback with the top bracket .
The new top tank is not identical to the old radiator and the bracket had to be cut apart to remove one of the saddles, the one saddle was then sliced and 3/16" grafted in to widen it out and then re-welded in a new position farther to the right edge of the existing bracket.
The rubbers bumpers did still fit and were re-used.
You cannot tell unless it is compared to a stock bracket.

It did get reversed somehow and you can see the old dimples from the tack weld spots showing.
I will un-bolt the bracket , and fill and sand the spot welds smooth when i get more time. I know it works as is , but it will bug me till I get it right.....

Re: Bubba's recycling project

The upper radiator support looks good. Would never know it was modified if you didn't say so.

That inline filter for the PS/Hydroboost, do you happen to have a pic or even better a part number? I looked and didn't see it in your previous pics.

Re: Bubba's recycling project

Thanks John, The inline filter is a Raybestos 3/8" universal magnetic 30 micron filter for power steering and automatic transmission fluids and is 200 PSI rated.
The NAPA part # is ATP 18512

Have I mentioned before I am not a cold weather fan???
I turned on my air compressor in the cold shop and it just howled the belt and would not turn over!
Time to change to to thinner oil.

I was cleaning and painting the battery box of youngest daughters GMC out in the cold and had to shine quartz lights on the spot for a while to heat it up enough to dry the paint..

Winter starts on about Dec 21??
It is cold now!~&^%$#@
I hate to think I am just getting old and cold when I used to live and work all day out in the weather..
I am blaming the aspirin and blood pressure meds for part of it!!

Sounds like you need a snow machine. Then you would love the cold. Funny how 32 is to cold to work in but you can go snow machining at 10 no problem. Well till the next day then you're wondering why you ache so much.yep snow machine and a hot tub.

Re: Bubba's recycling project

Thanks for the info Bruce.

Yeah, it seems that every year I am less and less of a fan of Winter. At least this year, it hasn't been bad at all.......yet. Nothing like the last 3 winters.

Re: Bubba's recycling project

I d love to be cruising in 70* weather! And I hope you have a great birthday!

It is a beautiful night with a great big moon.
I always make a trip through the barn and check the horses before turning in for the night. The thermometer says 18* F tonight.

Clear and cold, the coyotes are howling on the ridge and I can hear the train whistle from the tracks 12 miles away.

I was reading the paperwork about some of my new medications that come with turning 50 years old and it warns about the increased feelings of being cold ..
It's probably better being a little cold than being the same temp as the dirt........

Re: Bubba's recycling project

Bruce,

Thanks for the feedback on the hydroboost. I really do like the look of it over the traditional vacuum brake booster. I drive an astro van for work so the thought of having that quality of breaking on my 65 has me excited. Ill begin collecting parts to do the swap this spring. Thanks again!!

That was a pretty good game ... for us. 56 points
The seniors deserved to play a better opponent - and in a better and bigger bowl
Seriously now -- a 6 and 6 record will get you to a bowl game against the # 7 ranked team?
It is all about the money made on these boys that are not shaving every day of the week yet

Kellen Moore led the team to 50 wins and just 3 defeats
We are not perfect, we dont always have a schedule with the big names every week but they get it done!!!
But we have done darn well to have just three games that we have lost by a total of 5 points over the last 4 years
Way to go BSU

PS I am a proud alumni of BSU

That is so awesome that she loves this truck so much that she had to have her senior pictures with it. I have to say that it is a great that both of your daughters love trucks and cars...I wish my two daughters did. Anyway, I have been reading over your truck build and I love what you guys have done with it. Tell your daughter good luck with picking a college and with scholarships and stuff. Keep up the awesome job with your truck and with your daughters too.

Attachment 795280 I bled the brakes and the power steering and went test driving. Pretty nice brakes now. Maybe a little too soft and touchy . Might have to drive it for a while and get used to it and see if it will work.
very nice!

Re: Bubba's recycling project

DANG!! February was My last post???
Well its update time..
Still alive and well , I do still check in as I have am extra moment but have not had much extra time to be reading all the posts. After the winter hits I should have more time. (Wow even Alan is driving his truck now)

Met up with Daverod in July and had the pleasure of driving he and his wife all around town at the Emmett "Lost in the 50's" cruise in the '64.

Daughter has packed up and is now enrolled at the University of Kansas. Rock Chalk Jayhawks!!!
She is living in the Dorms and cars are not needed as the bus system goes everywhere they need to go. so the truck stayed home with us.

As you dads know, It really is tough on parents when your kids start growing up and moving away to college.
Every night when I came home from work and I saw the truck sitting there I knew my daughter was gone......Really it was very depressing to me. My wife could not stand to walk by her empty bedroom, but for me it was the truck, as it was the first thing I saw every night.

So after a couple weeks , I could not stand to let her sit in the driveway anymore, so I parked my truck and I have started driving the 64 to work. It looks pretty good parked at City Hall. Even parked by the mayor's car the other day
Lots more fun to drive than my new truck but I do miss the A/C in the 100*F summer heat.
I will drive her till the roads start freezing. then ????

Lola the truck is still cruising around with no problems. No repairs have been needed, still running strong. I have had no time to make any changes this summer until the winter comes and brings garage season. The bed still need finished and bodywork done , new gauge cluster , paint, and the list is very long...... she has been on the road for two years and over 15,000 miles now and not one breakdown or tow She has been a pretty dependable school truck!!

I keep having this vision of a small block under the hood...... yes the old six has been fun but just maybe a V8 could make thing better. Only problem is with a kid in college, and three years until my youngest daughter is ready for her turn, I think my play money budget has been cut for a while. Name: IMG_3342.jpg
