Re: Progress on my woman's '65 Short/Fleet.

It was a very busy weekend. On Friday, I went to the shop to finish assembly on the 350. Installed lifters, pushrods, adjusted the valves, water pump, fuel pump, exhaust and intake manifolds, and valve covers. Then loaded it up in the truck to transport it to Rowe.

Re: Progress on my woman's '65 Short/Fleet.

Then on Saturday, me and my Lady went up to Rowe, where the truck is, to stab the engine in. After fighting with it for awhile, trying to get the engine to line up with the tranny, we finally realized the v/c's were hitting the firewall. The tall one's will not work. I removed them and it went in like butter. I'll be ordering some short valve covers here soon. Here's some pics... Nothing like good ol' quality time with your lady! You did great, Babe!

I thought the same thing when I saw the first picture of the engine. Then I thought maybe you hammered the firewall in to make them fit like other people have done, bad Idea IMO. Glad to see you are going with the short ones. To bad they didn't work, it looked really good with the tall ones. Keep Up the good work.

I got the short ones ordered already. We joked about hammering the firewall, but I would do that. The tall ones are going in my '73.

Good progress. That motor looks like a runner. It'll be cool seeing pics of his and hers trucks together. Do y'all have a color or look picked out yet? The only thing missing was the pics of shop supplies.

For a while it's going to stay the same blue it already is until all the patching and body work is done. She has a few colors in mind. She also wants to run the side trim so it will have a two tone pattern.

I run those V-covers but used the forward engine position. I was changing everything so it was easy at the time. Cool pics!!!!!!!!

Re: Progress on my woman's '65 Short/Fleet.

I got the lower profile valve covers late last week. I plan on painting inside the fins Chevy orange. I seen a tv show a long time ago (I think Trucks when Stacy David was still the host) where this was done. He just masked the outer part of the v/c and then painted the top. Then, if I remember correctly, he used a rag with some kind of thinner to wipe the fins and logo clean. Anyone know what kind of thinner to use? Any pointers? I plan on doing the same to the matching air cleaner...

Re: Progress on my woman's '65 Short/Fleet.

Lacquer thinner would work, but you have to be really careful, otherwise you'll end up taking off more paint than you want to. How I've done this sort of thing is let the paint dry real good and then sand the paint off the tops with a sanding block. Of course the tips will no longer be polished. You might try combining the two and use a lacquer thinner dampened rag wrapped around a block of wood.

Re: Progress on my woman's '65 Short/Fleet.

Thanks for the advice. I was thinking of using lacquer thinner. It's got some power. If it done work, I'll consider the sanding block.

Re: Progress on my woman's '65 Short/Fleet.

Well, I grew a set and painted a set of valve covers last night. I was a little nervous to take these brand new v/c's out of the box and start spraying them, but it went well. Lacquer thinner and patience is all you need. I'm pretty happy with the result. What do you think?
