Re: Remember them metal license plate frames that

Greg, pretty cool item, thinking those were called "license plate -- toppers" Have had a couple very similar I sold at a swap meet a few years ago. Should have kept them but the 20/20 didn't kick in until afterwards. Usually the way it works. They were pretty popular late 40's and into the early 50's. Mounted to the top of the license plate, some were cast aluminum, some were stamped, and some smooth painted meta. A lot of amusements, attractions and apparently car dealers sold them or gave them away to spread their business presence at the time.

Might try to Google Hemphill Pontiac, Goose Creek, Texas and see what you find. Cool wall art hanger.

Re: Remember them metal license plate frames that

Already did the Google Hemphill Pontiac..came up with nada..
I also Googled Goosecreek TX..it appears that in 1948 Baytown, Pelly and Goosecreek were consolidated Into Baytown TX
So I'm guessing its pre1948 for sure..

Yep, license plate toppers.

I find Google and other search engines aren't so smart when it comes to what came before the existence of the internet. Much like the generation behind me who has no desire to look to our past, only "Moving forward". You'll find the major historic events and other widespread knowledge, but you can research way more at a library. If it hasn't been entered, Google, Wiki, etc. never heard of it.

Re: Remember them metal license plate frames that

A few I have. The Volz Chevy dealer was about 15 miles away from me. I have an old leather key holder from the same dealer that was in the glovebox of a 63 Biscayne that I bought years ago. The Fitzpatrick one was on my 93 Suburban when I got it from CA in 2018.

A few more....

I had picked 10 of these Bob Hannan Olds ones that were NOS (the dealership is long closed). I sold all but one.

I have a friend that I grew up with keeping pretty busy recreating old frames.
I recall back in the day, not liking them as most had a cheap feel (IMO) I don't care to advertise but will admit some of the older ones are pretty cool!
I have a few!

I bought a 1972 Cheyenne C10 brand new. I was too young to sign for it. It had a rear bumper with the dealers name stamped into it. I mudded over it and repainted it.
