Re: 1971 chev tractor puller

got some work done on the truck over the last couple of days. welded the rear end, added some wheelie bars, changed the offset on a set of wheels so i can finally use the puller tires i have for it. next up is to build a weight rack in the bed, and do a little motor work. hopefully next pull, the front end will get off the ground...

Re: 1971 chev tractor puller

Very cool. Can't wait to see some video with the puller tires on there. Let's see some air under the front tires, too! But if not, it's still a pretty cool build, and lots different than most of the others. Nice change of pace.

What plans do you have for the motor?

Re: 1971 chev tractor puller

i probably wont be running the puller tires until next season because because they would bump me to the exhibition class which would mean no trophy lol. as far as the motor goes, i adjusted the valves and changed the timing. when i pulled the first time with it, it sounded a little fluttery so i knew i needed to do a little work on it. no surprise since that was the first real hard run on the motor since i put it back together. the next pull is in august so ive got plenty of time to work on the truck.

Re: 1971 chev tractor puller

thanks mcbassin. im the only guy that pulls a 2wd gas pick up out here, everybody else pulls with a diesel pick up. honestly, seeing the same diesel trucks "roll coal" as the youngsters put it and pull the sled eveytime gets a little boring from a spectators stand point. im hoping that my truck will make some of the farm kids around here bring the 2wd farm trucks out and try to compete lol

Re: 1971 chev tractor puller

since i took the headlight buckets and everything out of the front of the truck, i wanted to replace the headlight areas with some aluminum plates so i did. i custom cut them myself but thought they could use a little something extra...

Nice project! One of my friends has a nasty 2wd with a 540 in it! My machine shop guy used to have a 2wd dodge cummins puller. That thing was a blast to watch!

Re: 1971 chev tractor puller

we didnt do too bad, 190ft the first pull, 184.64ft the second time out and the third time was exhibition because we changed the tires so i didnt pay attention to the distance. all in all still not too bad for a stock 400 that is needing some rings thrown at it. before the next pulls, we are going to swap out the 400 for a 454. next pulls are sept. 20&21 but if we dont get it done by then, there is an end of the year pull in eastern washington in oct.

Re: 1971 chev tractor puller

so, today i picked up a 454 to swap into the truck. the 400 is gonna go on a stand and will probably find its way into another project at some point. its a stock 454 but it will get some goodies thrown its way before it goes into the truck.

Man this thing is coming along awesome. I love the details and creativity you're putting into this build. One question though, where did you get the front light bezels?

Re: 1971 chev tractor puller

thanks low&slow. they are actually a 4'' led stop, turn, and tail light that i ordered off of ebay for another project that got traded off. they have the standard rubber grommet and the "chrome'' ring is plastic and held on with three screws. the plates they are mounted on though, i made those myself out of a road sign lol.

Cool stuff! You are correct, not many gas pullers left, especially 2wd

Re: 1971 chev tractor puller

i dont mind one bit Chevy_Guy2005. i used a lot of idea from the 80's when i was building thins truck. i got my tank off of ebay from a seller called thetankguy. its the same tank that speedway motors sells but theirs were all on back order when i last looked. are you gonna do a build thread for your truck too?

Re: 1971 chev tractor puller

Been a long time since I posted anything lol. A few years ago I sold this truck and focused on our other truck. This past Monday however, I bought it back for a couple hundred bucks as a roller. It's going to be getting a new rear end, new frame from behind the cab out the back, 18.4-16.1 pulling tires, and a mild built 454. Its going to be a completely different animal this time around.

I would upload some pics but they are not working 🤔
