Today was a very good day. Got the tune-up finished on the 305 and the oil changed. I fired the motor for the first time sence December of '06. She started right up and sounds awesome! I took some time after work to dry fit the S-10 brake booster and it looks like it will be a pretty stress-free install. I should have the booster in and brakes bled by this weekend.

Sence the old rod was thicker than the new rod, I drilled a hole in the old rod to accept the S-10 booster rod. Second, there are some "braces" in the firewall that are in the way of where the S-10 booster needs to bolt into... What a pain in the... You know? My manual brakes worked just fine. What is it in us that forces us to modify, change and "improve" our belongings, esp our rides, despite the fact that it will require alot of money, time and headache from us? It just doesn't add up... Hope you enjoy the pics.... D PS. Did I mention my truck was running again???

The brake lines from the master cylinder to the proportioning valve had to be remade because the fittings on my stock valve wouldn't fit into the S-10 unit.
Discovered something else fun today. Now my shift lever on the column hits the booster and won't allow it to go into park. Hmmmmm.... I didn't realize that it was going to be a problem. The steering column had to be taken out so I could get the booster bolted in... Back to the drawing board... D Hey, did I mention that the truck runs???

I got my steering column shift/power booster dilemma figured out. I cut a slit in the lower shift lever and bent it just far enough to clear the booster when the shift lever is in park. I then cut a piece of sheet metal to fill as a brace. I welded it and then checked it again for clearance. I was hanging over the radiator support and grille while I was welding. Not fun.
I also got the shift linkage in and got that all bolted up as well as the transmission cooler. I still need to bleed my brakes, they are at about 80%... Today was a very good day. I can now move my truck in and out of the shop on it's own power. Now granted the TV cable isn't installed yet as I'm still waiting on a special Holly bracket so I can hook the throttle and TV cable up with the correct geometries. I know I can't drive it yet, but soon... very, very soon...

That being said, they told me that Holley does not make a linkage mod for that carb for my 700R4. I looked at my carb closely and it does have a ball hookup at the bottom of the throttle linkage. So I thought to myself, (after being "encouraged heavily" from a good friend. Well, he basicly called me a puss for not trying it...) what do I have to loose to measure the TV cable fully extended and see if it lines up with the ball with the throttle opened wide. Sure enough it was in the correct position and when the throttle is at idle, the TV cable is fully released with no slop either direction. Does that make sence? Hmmmm....  I ran through the list of things I still need to do to my truck. 1. Install the inner fenders 2. Take the masking tape holding the tailgate closed off and install hidden latches 3. Install the power steering lines so I can have power steering 4. Install the vacuum line to the power brakes so that they work 5. Install my stereo speakers 6. Hook up the linkage for the heater controls 7. Hook up my speedometer 8. Find out why my fuel guage isn't reading fuel in the tank 9. Find out why my temp guage isn't working 10. Bleed the brakes as they are still "squishy" 11. Install door weatherstripping so my cab doesn't leak 12. Install my seatbelts 13.... I suppose there are still more things but those are the most pressing. I just had to do it... I had too... I fired the truck up and drove the sucker home. God that felt so good. I had no idea how fast I was going, if my engine was running cool or hot, if I could stop safely enough if someone pulled out in front of me or if I was frying my transmission because the TV cable wasn't adjusted right... But I got to drive it...  D

No update pics yet, but I'll post some later once I get back from the shop.
I need to get down to the DMV and get new tags for the truck. I'm going to finish up on some of the little things that need to be done to the truck this weekend. Inner fenders, hooking up the booster vacuum line, figuring out why my tank guage doesn't read... those kind of things. D

Well I got an update on a rebuild kit for my Holley 4360 quadrajet. The closest one I could find was in Kentucky and would take 7-10 days to get to me. I'm not really into hard to find parts for my vehicles...
So I did some searching and found a lightly used Edelbrock 1409 and stuck it on the intake. I like... That was worth the hundred bucks I spent on it. At least now I can find parts if needed and they are really easy to adjust. Really made a differance in the way the truck sounds and responds. I also got my inner fenders in and got my door weatherstripping in. I was at the salvage yard on Friday and I found a nice set out of a '98 GMC 1500 pickup. They had to be trimmed down some because they were too long, but they fit perfectly. That was 10 bucks well spent. Progress is being made... D

The car is a '48 Ford 2 door coupe we had just painted. The guy on the left is Fred, my business partner in the body shop. I'm the goober on the right (closest to the door)... I'll post more pics of the progress soon, I got the power brakes working and the power steering in too! D

As much as I love the older trucks, I am often reminded of the fact that my truck is truly over 40 years old. Getting the bleed valves open on the brakes was a nightmare. I thought I was going to strip most of them or break them with as much pressure I was applying to get them to open up. Still need to get my rims on too. I'm just waiting for them to arrive. I took the truck on some errands yesterday and when I came out of the hardware store a couple of older guys were outside in the parking lot discussing how nicely I redid the cab to fit a smaller rear window... As I walked toward my truck they stopped talking and asked if it was my rig. I said yes and they complemented me on my sheetmetal work on getting a small rear window to fit... I asked why they thought I had did a refit and one of them said, "Well, my '71 had a large back window..." Well, you know the rest... D

I caught the S-10 booster, just wondering why you didn't use a 71-72 power booster? Is the s-10 better? The reason I ask is that the non power brake boosters and power boosters are a direct bolt up (one for the other with no issues), I put one in Rick's (toomanytoyz's) truck and bolted on with no issues with the rod or the auto linkage? I know a little late, but just wondering, if the s-10 is better as I am doing my 2wd Blazer after the 67 is gone.
