Re: For those who use diesel oil in a gas engine
It's hype. I have been running a 400sb on delvac for almost 10 years now. 8k RPM red line. This truck was a daily driver for 5 of those years. Drag raced every chance I got and sat in traffic every morning for 1-2 hours. Flat tappet with EDMed oil holes on the lifter face. Believe what you want but I know what works. Delvac in my cummins and the k20 above and tractor supply/rural king oil out of 5 gallons buckets for the rest of the fleet. If you go looking you can find the same hype in the diesel rags going back to atleast 2006. Funny thise motors still run to. It's really the same as reading articles for royal purple etc.

Re: For those who use diesel oil in a gas engine
I would not take any thing serious that some of the clowns on the Motor Trend channel put out. Anyone that goes out on the highway with broken old vehicles, patching them up as they break down is a disgrace to Hot Rodding.

Re: For those who use diesel oil in a gas engine
Yes, and the strategy for bringing new guys into the sport and helping the aftermarket to sell more parts is pure genius. ;-)
That said, most journalists definitely have limits to their knowledge and skills. However, it sounded like the author of this article had 15 years formulating experience. So I'll listen to him. I work for a large oil company. My experience was gasoline formulating and testing. But I also knew lube formulators. Their message was to buy a decent mainstream brand of the right specs for the kind of engine I had and change it at the recommended interval. When I asked about putting DELO in my Taurus (maybe 10 years ago), they said that it was probably a waste and that the extra additives to help diesels perform might shorten the life of my catalytic converter. I use DELO 15W40 for the ZDDP in my C10 with 350 and flat tappet mechanical cam. However, in the past 5 years or so, diesels have been cutting back on ZDDP to preserve the life of diesel particle traps. So not quite the zinc benefit it once had.

Re: For those who use diesel oil in a gas engine
Will diesel oil work in other applications? Sure.
Is it the best choice? Not always.

Re: For those who use diesel oil in a gas engine
My old man is a retired White Tractor and New Holland mechanic. For years we used Amoco 200 HD in EVERYTHING. Gas, Diesel, LP, turbo or non-turbo. When we couldn't get Amoco anymore, we switched to Rotella. I can't think of any oil related issues. There's 60 and 70 year old gas tractors out there still being used.
I know the experts say that the ZDDP clogs cat converters, but if there's that much oil blow -by getting into the exhaust, I would think there is a bigger problem, like valve seals or worn out rings. |

But I know from motorcycles, and dyno's, that fuel most certainly is formulated specific ways and they do indeed affect HP output. So while we have all used things in ways they aren't supposed to and it works, again it doesn't mean its optimized or perfect.

Re: For those who use diesel oil in a gas engine
It was a good read on oils.....& I will say that I am not racing, but have run diesel oils in 2 smallblock chevs. no issues, street engines......but turned up to 7000, from time to time. Never rolled a camshaft, or had bottom issues? My 5.3 has a roller cam.....good old penz oil & a pint of Lucas. I do not worry about the zink with the roller cam. On a full race engine, you might look at the race oils....but on the street, I dont see it.Most of the time, those street engines run in the 2500-3000 rpm range (about what that deisel will run). Just my thoughts...

Sold it for a SN. Would still have it if I didn't get a deal on a RN I couldn't pass up.

Re: For those who use diesel oil in a gas engine
Here's another article I just received in the Hot Rod magazine newsletter. Don't know how they got my e mail but I do like their newsletter. https://www.motortrend.com/how-to/di...D754B6D00350D1
