Re: 12 bolt axle seal question

This might help someone else

So in there rears the axle bearing has no inner race. If your bearings went bad it would score the axle shaft because of the no inner race thing. instead of having to buy new axle shafts they came up with this kit to move the bearing outward a bit and change the location of where the bearing rode on the axle shaft. you basically tap the bearing and housing in the end of the axle tube where the original bearing would be.

old bearing repair kit installed in the axle tube without the seal

this is the right side that is still good with the seal still in

the way to remove them (thanks Wendell) is to take the shafts out and run a rod through the axle housing and tap it out from the back. I didnt have a rod or piece of pipe so..well, you know the rods you can pound in the ground to hold up a birdfeeder or windchimes? with the squiggly ends on it to hang the stuff off of? well I cut the squiggleys off and the base and used that. I dont really like birds or windchimes.

put it through from the right side and hit it a few times to release the brearin repair kit

you can see it about 1/2 way out here

here it is

end of axle tube without it in.

I actually had some 12 bolt shafts at Johns and I swapped one out because the one in this had a broke stud. If I got the other shaft I could go back to regular bearings because the shafts I had are not scored up. since I already ordered the repair kit I will just use it.

Re: 12 bolt axle seal question

Hi folks, I found this thread while googling 12 bolt axles.

does anybody have the bearing and seal numbers so I can try and obtain them over this side of the pond.

The problem is that I fitted a 12 bolt rear to my 1009cucv and the American parts suppliers over here don't know the difference between a 10 and 12 bolt SF and 14 bolt FF. They want to know year and make of vehicle. Any modifications and they're lost.

Going by the casting mine is a 1975 12 bolt (3.08:1) but as I don't know what it came off I can't get parts. Both bearings have broken up and the seals are too badly damaged to get anything off them. I also need the pinion seal number as well.

Thanks for any help

Simon.

Where can I get the kit your talking about? My passenger side axle in rear is leaking. The race (axle) needs to be replaced. This might save me some money if there's a kit to keep from replacing the shaft.

Re: 12 bolt axle seal question

I put in a 14 bolt ff so I didn't have to
Worry about the axleshafts coming out.
It's good to find new parts for
Stockers like this though. Getting harder
to find parts and listings for our trucks anymore.

This thread saved me today! I got to learn about this very situation. Pull pass drum and axle. Napa was coming up empty on seal match. Pulled driver side axle seal notices it was stock. Googled axle seal 1968 chevy truck and this thread popped up. Great info on the site! This is why I alway post here. Gotta keep growing the “info tree” I pulled axle repair housing out installed ne wheel bearing and stock axle seal! Back to stock!! I was instal lining new mosher axles 5 lug when all this “FUN” started.
