0.050" Cam specs keeps an Apples to Apples comparison.

This is why they make different camshafts. for Different applications.

Tom I am not trying to pick a Fight.

If I was I would bring up the Subject of Timed Vacuum Port vs Full Vacuum Port.

Because Timed Vacuum Port on a vacuum advance is the Only way to go

Re: Cam choice?

GM specified 3.70 gears in many of their high performance cars. It also makes a dandy gear for trucks.
In your case that would give you a 2.52*3.73=9.4 final ratio.
The difference a gear change would likely blow you away.
Almost impossible to go fast with 3.08 gears unless you have a BBC or a Turbo.
I believe you will be happiest going the "gears" first route.
Cheers and good luck.

Re: Cam choice?

When I went from a 3:08 to a 3:73, it was like 100 extra HP!

Re: Cam choice?

So I’ve circled back around and decided to swap the cam first, knowing that the gear change would have been a welcomed upgrade to what I currently have. I ordered the xe268 full kit. The carb tuning & distributor issues were bothering me and tbh I just don’t want that huge lope cam sound on my daily driver. I’m hoping that I’ll be much happier with this cam and the performance of the truck in general compared to what I have now until. Tuning should be a lot easier anyways and increased vacuum should help my power brakes.. I read enough posts/comments on the web saying that a 2200-2400 stall actually works well with this cam that I was comfortable giving it a shot (knowing that my g/r affects this as well). Once I’m through with this I’ll just drive it until winter and then likely go to a 3.42 to get things right where they need to be for what I want : ). Wish me luck on my first cam swap lol
Thanks for the advice/input everyone
Mike

Re: Cam choice?

Here are the cam specs.
Intake Duration at .050 Inch Lift: 224
Exhaust Duration at .050 Inch Lift: 230

Xtreme Energy™ 224/230 Hydraulic Flat Tappet Cam for Chevy Small Block. Great for street machines. Largest cam for stock converter, but better with a 2000+ stall.

Glad you were able to make a decision, this forum is great for bouncing ideas around.

Re: Cam choice?

Are you doing the swap yourself?
Do you have all the tools?
Like a balancer puller, torque wrench, engine hoist, etc.

Being it’s so close to spring I’d leave it alone until winter. That’s just my opinion. Cam jobs tend to snowball.

Re: Cam choice?

I should have the tools. I plan to just rent the balancer removal tool from autozone as needed. I purchased a valve spring removal tool, pushrod length checker, cam install handle, quality fel-pro gaskets for everything except oil pan, rtv, break-in oil, new balancer bolt, etc… I tend to get a little ocd about this stuff so once I get going i won’t be able to rest until it’s done lol. I’m sure my brain won’t let me wait until winter knowing that parts are sitting in the garage : )

Engine specs are listed in photo (this is what I was told when I bought the truck).
Also - new Edelbrock avs2 650, has full length headers, MSD 8362 Hei ignition (full recent tune up) Freshly rebuilt th350 w/ b&m 2400 stall and 3.07 gears. I run 93 octane gas.
Truck pulls good after about 2500 rpm but it’s seems really darn slow getting to that point. feel like I’ve got to give it a lot of throttle for minimal acceleration. I’m trying to get to where I have daily driver that’s super fun to drive and can still comfortably cruise on the interstate. I feel like the current cam is probably really holding back the power in the range that I actually drive it in

*I have reached out to comp/lunati for recommendations online but have not gotten a response yet

I asked this same question about ten years ago when I was rebuilding a 350 out of one of my 72's. The Comp Cam 268H and the Lunati 10120702 or the milder 10120701 I ran the 701 for years and it was/is a great low end cam. Had the 268H in a 396 I have no complaints, good low end. https://www.lunatipower.com/voodoo-h...k-262-268.html and the Comp, https://www.compcams.com/high-energy...all-block.html I didn't see a non Marine cam for small block Chevy? They had everything else? Comp's changed up their format a bit. Put a 3:73 posi in it, and hang on to your hat!
