Re: "Sweet Pea" 1975 Cheyenne 20

Fuel neck progress... Got the ICT billet coupler, as well as a length of 1 11/16th filler hose from Gates. Made the cuts and out it all together. A few more hose clamps than I'd like, but it'll do the job.

I thought, you already replaced the fuel tanks.

I believe he did a 'new' FI spec (1987) pass side tank w/the proper lines etc & is using the drivers side as an aux tank. Motor runs off of the pass side 'main' tank (supply & return). Driver side 'auxiliary' tank carries the extra capacity & utilizes a transfer pump arrangement to refill the main tank when the level drops to low level. Auxiliary pump is just a 12v switched source & only used for the transfer. Eliminates the need for the high-pressure dual supply/return pollack valve complexity.

Re: "Sweet Pea" 1975 Cheyenne 20

Today's progress... Mounted auxiliary fuel pump, ran the wiring up into the engine bay, relay and all.

Untitled by awesome_adawson, on Flickr

Untitled by awesome_adawson, on Flickr

Fresh spark plugs (NGK TR6) and shiny new plug wires from my local speed shop. Upper radiator hose. Trickier process than I thought... ended up with one off a 2005 Chevy express van. My radiator has 1.5" outlets, and the upper water pump inlet slightly smaller, like 1 3/8. The hose I got fits the water pump neck perfectly but is pretty tight on the radiator outlet. I'll be able to squeeze it on there though. Still on the hunt for a lower... water pump outlet on the lower is much larger... like 1 5/8.

Also got the intake piping started. I ordered a cheapo intake off Ebay, but mostly I just wanted the elbow and the 45* bent tubing. The filter and clamps it came with are junk. I ordered the rest of the stuff I need from siliconeintakes.com I'm using all T bolt clamps, and since the MAF has slightly weird sized inlet and outlet I got a 4" to 3.75 reducer and a 3.75" to 3.5" reducer to mount the air filter. Should be here in a day or two... All told i should be into it about $130, including all the T bolt clamps.

Re: "Sweet Pea" 1975 Cheyenne 20

Next on the list is finishing wiring and tackling gauges. Starting with the oil pressure. I'm going to run my original gauges, but I also want to keep the factory sending units intact. I'd like to be able to mount a scangauge or similar on the OBD2 so I can keep tabs on all the vitals.

Im going to run the oil pressure off this port (ICT Billet PN 551608)
Untitled by awesome_adawson, on Flickr

And hook it up to my original oil pressure gauge fitting.
Untitled by awesome_adawson, on Flickr

Untitled by awesome_adawson, on Flickr

The only trouble I'm having is finding out what size that original gauge port is... It's tiny. Of course I sold off the original 350 and it had the fitting still screwed into the block... So if anybody knows offhand what size that little thing is let me know!

EDIT Found the info im pretty sure this is it. Lockdoc to the rescue...

Re: "Sweet Pea" 1975 Cheyenne 20

Ok, got all the components of a new oil pressure gauge line...
ICT Billet 551608
Weatherhead 6100x2 (two of them)
Weatherhead 6200x2
1/8th copper tubing (43" in my case)

a little tricky to find the stuff, but ended up having success at my local NAPA.

Untitled by awesome_adawson, on Flickr

Also scored some potential lower radiator hose candidates... Gonna mount em up tomorrow and see what fits.
Untitled by awesome_adawson, on Flickr

All the intake goodies arrived today too, so I'll be able to piece that together with MAF.

Getting closer! Next up is temp gauge.

Re: "Sweet Pea" 1975 Cheyenne 20

Got the oil pressure gauge line hooked up! I ran some insulator hose over it to shield it from the exhaust. Came out pretty neat. My only disappointment was that I did a crap job of making the coils, they look all wonky. I might pull it all apart and re-bend them.

Re: "Sweet Pea" 1975 Cheyenne 20

Also got the intake squared away. Waiting on one last tbolt clamp and it'll be done! had to fab up a little arm for the bracket to mount it to the fender.

So... if you're keeping track. From throttle body to filter it goes:
TB-->4" 90* Silicone elbow-->powdercoated steel 4" tubing 45* bend--> 4' to 3.75" silicone reducer--> MAF outlet-->MAF inlet--> 3.5" to 3.75 silicone reducer--> Filter with 3.5" outlet.

90* and steel tube re from Ebay kit, the rest is from Siiconeintakes.com. Tbolt clamps on everything. (Have I mentioned I hate worm gear hose clamps yet)

Lower Rad hose is in place too. It's a pretty good fit... tbolt clamps help give me confidence. 2nd pic is part# from Oriellys.

Next on the list:
Temp gauge sender, voltage gauge sender, research steam port, order speedometer converter from Dakota, wire up aux fuel pump, add fluids, belt, loom up some wiring, and... get ready to fire up!

Take a light rubbing compound & a cleaner wax combo (50/50) to the firewall. Those light scale/rust spots need hit individually w/a small rag (old gym sock is perfect) leave the nicer open area's alone 'till the rough stuff is done. T Return w/a fresh rag & wax it all. It will turn out nice. I'm a detailer & that is one one way to restore/preserve the OG.

Thanks for the tip! I suck at detailing. I need to go over the entire truck to preserve the paint too.

Thanks Jon! Yeah tbolts are the jam. I've ordered mine from Amazon mostly, brand is Squirrely motorsports. They're good quality. lots of super junky chinese ones out there.

Re: "Sweet Pea" 1975 Cheyenne 20

Been pretty quiet in here lately. I was on vacation for a few weeks. Back home and ready to finish this project up...

I took the truck to Muffler Works in Petaluma to have the exhaust welded up. Went with true duals. 2.5" H pipe crossover, Flowmaster 40's, 3" angle cut chrome tips exiting behind both wheels... Under $800 total. I was able to start it at the exhaust shop and drive home. First drive under its own power. Still finicky on the start up... But once it caught it idled great and ran fine.

Shakedown issues:
Oil pressure gauge line is leaking at the fitting. I've tightened it to death, and added some thread sealer paste... no luck... leaks like a sieve. Going to have to rethink that situation.

Starting... It is not really happy firing up. Cranks and coughs, when it has started, its almost like its accidental, when I'm backing the key off crank, it catches and runs.

Cooling system. On the drive home from the shop it got pretty hot. The fans never kicked on, but there was definitely some heat... steam line was bubbling pretty good. Temp gauge was reading, but was reading barely 1/4 at the hottest. I'll need to check the temp with a scan gauge to cross reference.

Trans. Was slow to engage, needed a quart or two of fluid. Added that and it shifted nicely.

Truck had great power, sounded awesome. Steering was leak free and smooth, brakes worked great! I'm going to bring it to a local shop and have my tuner tap into it to hopefully iron out the starting issues, the fans and temp situation and clean up any tune problems. I'm allllllllllllllmost there!!

Gauges are still a big question. I bought the speedo converter from Dakota Digital, but the frustration with the leaky oil pressure lines has me wondering if i shouldn't just bite the bullet on some full Dakota Digitals... we shall see.

Re: "Sweet Pea" 1975 Cheyenne 20

Gauge time... Dakota Digital VHX from Squarebody Syndicate. I ordered the BIM-2 module to access the OBD2 port. So far i've been overwhelmed by reading all the instructions but i'm starting to sort out all the proper wiring.
