Sbc 400

Seeking some advice on a SBC 400 rebuild. Looking at an Endelbrock Intake and carb package but don't know if I should order a EGR intake or not. The old intake has the middle runners blocked, so do i need to purchase the EGR Intake or can I run a non EGR???

Re: Sbc 400

I have been running a non EGR SB 400 with an Edlebrock carb and manifold for about 20 years without any problems. The only purpose for an EGR valve is to reduce NOX emissions. Unless your truck needs to be emissions tested to pass inspection, you don't need it.

Almost, yes it does reduce NOx, but in doing so it reduces the combustion temperature which can cause pinging, especially under load. So depending on how the engine is built and how it is driven, who's to say. If you are going to have a built 400 and run a large carb and weekend drive it and run premium fuel, I'd say no. If it is a mild build and you plan on towing a travel trailer and daily drive it I'd say yes.

Thanks to all, it will be a weekend driver and will not be towing anything. Is there any significant power loss when runnng an EGR intake?

Re: Sbc 400

I tow a 6500 lb camper trailer with my 400 and have no pinging problems.I'm running 9.5:1 compression with an Comp Cam Extreme energy 252-H and an edelbrock intake with the heat runs blocked and a Quadrajet. I've driven from high 30degs to over 100degs with no pinging or problems. I run the 4 core desert cooler with a 160 thermostat. It will get up to 180-190degs when running the air conditioning in slow traffic but cools back down at speed. I run a ridged GM 7 blade fan a 5 speed NV3500 with 410:1 gears. I love the 400 got rid of the 350.

Re: Sbc 400

You will notice no difference in power from a non-EGR intake to one equipped with one. It's an emissions item.
