special truck trim packages ?

The thread about cars you wanted but never owned stirred up my memory banks and I remember a friend of mine back in the 70s bought a new truck, GMC with front air dam, roof spoiler and rock guards behind the front and rear wheels along with some vinyl graphic on the sides. I believe his was a 454 truck. It had aluminum wheels and L60/15 rubber.
The important part was the trim package, spoiler and graphics.
It looked like this first one pictured. It was around 1974-5.
I have searched and cannot find but this one pic of the truck and little else other than there were about 300 produced. Since GM had the Indy 500 pace cars and support vehicles for most of the 70s, I think this truck may have been built as part of that group of vehicles, although it has no Indy wording on it. Notice the side strobe like graphics that were used on other Indy support vehicles during those years.
I don't guess the roof spoiler and air dam were popular as I've only seen a few of them on any trucks through the years.
Anyone here remember seeing one of these or owned one of these trucks?
I am not looking to buy one, only find out more about them.

Re: special truck trim packages ?

Well looks like we have the source of the package.
In that thread was that link and in that link was the different packages GMC offered. One of those was called Impact 76. I assume it was for the 76 model year but it may have been offered in 74 or 5. A buyer could pick out parts like the air dam and roof spoiler and fender flairs and strobe stripes. You can see the parts and stripe resemblance between this 76 and the one in the pic I first posted. So a good salesman or knowledgeable buyer could check the right boxes and order his choice of trim to personalize his truck to suite his taste. I don't believe many were aware of these options back then.

Re: special truck trim packages ?

I linked this to a thread in the square body forum a while back.

https://autowise.com/all-of-73-87-ch...trucks-part-i/

And Boog, I was offered one of those roof spoilers by a body man I know for my then 84 gmc. He might still have it. He was talking about cleaning out the mess though. Could be landfill by now.

Re: special truck trim packages ?

Lots of good info here on the various trim packages through the years. I had forgotten there were so many. You could do a lot with some vinyl graphics and some dams, flairs and spoilers back then. Especially since there really wasn't much horse power to talk about during those years.

We had a member here way back when who had a website for 73-87s before they grew so popular. He had breakdowns on all the limited editions. I think his name was 73 Big Block or something like that

Re: special truck trim packages ?

This is an excellent thread! Im not a square body guy but Id still take a 76-79 orange with white stripe stepside sport edition.

Unfortunately (or fortunately heh) I never see those years of trucks around much especially a stepside.

Re: special truck trim packages ?

It's unfortunate that in my little corner of the world, back then, folks were buying trucks just for work, short beds and longs, and we never saw any of these cool optioned trucks. I could have been all over an Amarillo or Street Coupe back then. I did own a 78 Chevy step side and looked into a stripe kit for it but with mine being a dark brown ( Cordova brown I think ) I didn't care for the stripe colors or something.
It is cool to read the mag stories on these trucks back then. Thanks all.
