SM465/ Bellhousing Mounting
1966 GMC Suburban 4x4. My NP540 transmission was leaking badly and I was unable to find bearings and seals to fix that. I have a SM465 that I was planning to install. The bellhousing for the NP540 has two mounting spots to bolt to the crossmember but the bellhousing for the SM465 does not. How do I mount the SM465? In the picture the bellhousing for the SM465 is on the left and the one for the NP540 is on the right.

Re: SM465/ Bellhousing Mounting
You need a bell housing for a 68-72 truck that had an SM 465 trans. The center hole is larger then one from a SM 420.

Re: SM465/ Bellhousing Mounting
The one I have has the 5-1/8” opening. It’s the mounting I’m having a problem with.

Re: SM465/ Bellhousing Mounting
You have the alum. housing that was used from 73 on up. It used a mount on the rear of the trans. You need the cast iron BH with the 5 1/8 hole used with sm465 68-72. It has the mounts on the bottom of the BH. I have heard of guys boring the one with the smaller hole out to 5 1/8.

Re: SM465/ Bellhousing Mounting
Thank you George. Took awhile for it to soak in. I was sold the wrong one a long time ago, how could that be? Thanks again.

Re: SM465/ Bellhousing Mounting
Just a thought.....if your bell Cast bell does not measure the same as the input coller......pretty sure it wont, as posted. 68-up had the 5.125 hole, whereas 67 back had a 4.687 hole. The easy way would be tho swap the cast bell(40 dollar part), or my thoughts would be to take the bearing retainer to the machinist...chuck it in the lathe& trim the OD to spec? just a thought Longhorn
