My 1968 50th Short Bed Barn Find

I’ve been meaning to share this one for a while. I was not looking for another truck when I stumbled across this one. After talking with a buddy, he talked me into it. The original owner parked it in 2005 once Virginia implemented some sort of emissions change? I don’t live there so have no idea what that was about. After the original owner passed shortly after that, it was moved into his daughters barn. I had to take a shot in the dark as it was 10 hours away and the elderly owners could not send anymore pictures. When I arrived, I was pleasantly surprised by the glove box having the SPID protecto plate and original purchase paperwork out of Charlotte, North Carolina. Sitting on the floor were NOS rockers, sill plates, weatherstripping and several other NOS parts. I brought it home, cleaned it up and lubed everything up so the hood, doors, tailgate, windows all work well. I’ve been gathering parts for it as I’m undecided on what direction to go in. I just ordered the SMS 50th seat upholstery for it. I used them for my 72 Blazer highlander and it was well worth the wait. I decided to play it smart and order that stuff early on. I just don’t know if I should for the minimal rust repair to the lower panels and reshoot the white only and keep the original patina paint. Blow it apart and do a full nice repaint with modern LS disguised as an original 327 or keep the Inline 6. Anyway, plenty of time before I need to decide on the final outcome. Enjoy the pictures!

I purchased some full wheel covers for it like I had seen on most 50th trucks. When I picked it up, I didn’t see them listed on the spid. Was the other option for these, dog dish caps? If so, were the wheels body color or black?

I dont know about trucks paint process but on the car side if the little cap was slated for the steel wheels then they were painted body color. Black was only for wheels that were gonna get full wheel covers.

Since anniversary trucks were CST's shouldnt that truck have had carpet instead of the rubber mat? Im not super versed with all the special stuff the anniversary trucks had.

Re: My 1968 50th Short Bed Barn Find

What a great find! Thanks for sharing.

This truck had white wheels with chromed dog dish caps (P03 on SPID).

If it was mine I would give the white surfaces a careful CLR / 0000 steel wool rub down by hand. I bet the white will mostly come back through. Then I’d replace the things needed like seat upholstery, body mounts, maybe the driver rocker and touch up to match. Detail everything and leave it original. I think that will bring you the most value (return) and desirability.

Just my $.02! Can’t wait to see what you do!

That is the plan I am leaning toward. Just the minimal rust repair necessary to make it solid and then spot paint those in. Then just CLR bath and maybe boiled linseed oil on the rest of the paint. Undecided between keeping the original 6 or swapping in a LS dressed up like a 327 from the time period. Will probably work on getting it cleaned up first and then decide on what drivetrain.

Not all anniversary trucks were CST, I’ve seen far more that were Custom trim level and as such had a gold floor mat

Fantastic find.I love all the 50th anniversary trucks.
I agree with your plan but I would keep the 6cyl. Stovebolts are getting rarer by the day in these trucks and I think it's sad.
Having said that it is your truck and I'm glad you rescued it.

Great find!.

For '68, I think your wheels would have been silver regardless of what covers came on them. The 4X4's had black wheels.

That is an amazing find, let alone a 50th, but shortbed too. I agree with others, that paint will most likely clean up pretty good.
Thanks for sharing, and the pics

Mine is a Custom and had a gold mat in it. The rubber was crumbling and they didn't reproduce the gold mat so mine has gold carpet now.

You are probably right about the wheels. Definitely not body color in 68. That was 67 only.

Wow, what a great find. Please keep the OG paint! The 327 style LS swap would be a nice upgrade.

Nice find! Too bad they cut the dash for that radio though. Drive the wheels off of it.
