Dash Cluster Removal

I am new to this and am having a bit of trouble removing the gauge cluster. I removed the knobs for the wiper and lights as well as the surrounding screws. What is left to remove the cluster. Do I have to remove those chrome knob backing plates or something else?
Any help is appreciated.

Re: Dash Cluster Removal

yes, those need to come off in order to remove the cluster. They are simply threaded on. you should be able to get em off by hand. You also have to disconnect the speedo cable from the speedometer, oil pressure line, and the plug for the printed circuit. After that, it should pop right out.

One last item to remember
There is a fiber optic line that illuminates the shifter indicator on automatics. It's connected to one of the twist on black light sockets on the back of the cluster circuit board
That bulb socket will have to be removed. Just twist black bulb socket out 1/2 turn counter clockwise.

Re: Dash Cluster Removal

I find that using a pair of needle-nosed pliers with the tips inserted in the 2 holes of the knob bezels and twisted counterclockwise works best on pulling them.
90 degree needle nose work even better.

Also, if you have the mechanical oil pressure gauge, don't forget to disconnect the oil line at the back of the gauge, BEFORE pulling off the dash panel. Ruined a good pair of suede boots that way.
