Rear Shock mounting position - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Continuing work on my '67
I noticed the rear shocks, as mounted, look slightly twisted at the upper mount.
The lower end is mounted outboard of the bracket...is this correct?
I couldn't find a clear picture in the assembly manual

I do believe your shocks are mounted on the incorrect side of the lower bracket. Move the bottom over and I'll bet you will be much happier with the alignment.

I didn't like the shock alignment either so I used the shock relocator kit and it makes a big difference on the shock position but I'm not real happy about how the lower mount is so I'm going to use a set of the 63-66 lower mounts and that should work a lot better for alignment and it gives more room to run exhaust out the back .

Looks like the 63-66 mount is better, in general. Wonder why they would have changed the design? Something else to be on the lookout for

As far as why they quit using it. Money!
The early one has more bends especially 90 degree ones, which mean a heavier duty stamping die and more pressure to stamp it. That will cause the die to wear out faster and than the die for the newer version.
With all of the bends close together the metal being stamped is drawn thin so a heavier guage of metal was likely needed. Maybe if Grumpy has time he could verify that as well as, does the earlier mount hold the bottom of the shock further out in front of the axle?

I'm going to act like I didn't see anything past my previous post in this thread. Otherwise I'd be on the lookout for a 63-66 mount.
