New to me Stepside 4x4!!

Couldn’t be MORE excited. I’ve sealed the deal on a 1972 GMC 4x4 Stepside. It’s Canadian made, and spent the majority of its life in BC. I’m certain it was a fleet truck but hasn’t had any hard work by looks of the box. It has the yellow exterior but white interior and under hood, with special paint listed in 3 different places on the SPID. It’s unmolested, and has original everything, outside of wheels. 292, 4 speed. It’s even running and mobile. Lights, heater controls, wiper motor, all works! Can’t wait to begin the restore.

Haha! Man, I hear ya. Maybe I’ll drive down one day when it’s finished. So, I know the GM records were destroyed in a fire, so we have no exact numbers as to how many were made. But I believe around 1500 Chev short box stepside 4x4’s were made in 1972. We’d have to assume there were even less GM’s correct? Also, would those numbers include the Canadian distribution - I believe they must have. Any help here would be great.

Re: New to me Stepside 4x4!!

I thought Canada GM still had records for the pickups made up there? It’s GMC USA records that were lost. I could be wrong but hope I’m not.

Ya, I was very lucky to find this one. It was only an hour away. The guy had it for over 7 years and never got to restoring it. I know it’s not an optioned truck but it’s never been touched!

Re: New to me Stepside 4x4!!

So, because this was a special order fleet truck, I can technically paint it whatever colour I want and it won't be taking away from it's originality. Would you guys go black or white, or redo the entire truck something different while keeping the black accents in the interior? I know it's personal preference but just asking for fun.

Great truck with cool options. I'm envious. I think you are correct in assuming there were far less GMC "Fendersides" built than Chevy "Stepsides" (hint )

If it were me I’d restore as originally assembled down to the paint. Was it originally white? I’d see if GM Canada can provide color details as assembled.

Damn - thank you! This is my first GMC. My first truck was my dad's 69 Chev 3/4 ton Camper Special. Wish i still had that. I picked up a 72 Blazer 6 years ago and have kept it all 100% stock.
