292 Engine mount help

So I’ve been considering a 292 swap into a ‘72 C10 that was a 350 V8 truck. 292 passenger side engine frame perch is SUPER hard to find these days, but I got one…or so I thought I had. I need to see if anyone can tell me if the 67-72 292 passenger side engine frame perch is its own thing? Yes I know it’s different that a V8 and different than a 250 passenger side mount. But, is it different than a 292 mount from prior to 67? I’ll post a few pics of what I have.

First pic I’d the mounts bolted to the engine. Front of engine it to the right. Passenger mount is 4 inches forward of driver side.

2nd is a close up of the pax side mount.

3rd is the original V8 engine frame perches.

4 is the “292” mount set into the frame. If I line it up with the forward 2 holes then it sits forward of the cross member.

Re: 292 Engine mount help

Is it possible that I actually bought a non 292 mount? Or is this a correct 292 mount for a pre 67-72?

Re: 292 Engine mount help

Let me correct myself. With my 292 mount (the rusty one) set on the frame lined up with the 2 forward holes it sits in the same position as the V8 mount and the driver side mount.

Re: 292 Engine mount help

Awesome pics LockDoc. But now I’m even more confused….

So it looks like I do indeed have a 292 passenger side mount. So that’s a good thing. And the 292 mount will bolt into the front holes in the frame and cross member. The driver side mount will need to be moved to the rear holes.

What is confusing me is that if I move the driver side mount to the rear holes and mount the 292 I will need to move the transmission aft also??

I was under the assumption (I know never assume) that the 292 would drop in with the correct mount. Does the transmission sit in a different location between a 350 V8 and a 292?? That will create other issues like drive shaft and shift linkage. I’m also wondering if my 350 V8 mounts were in the wrong position to begin with? They were in the front holes, in my pic the drivers side mount hasn’t been moved since I pulled the engine. The engine I pulled out is NOT original to the truck. I’ll go look this morning to see if the transmission cross member has another set of mounting holes aft of where it’s currently mounted.

Thx!

Re: 292 Engine mount help

Lets get this straightened out , What engine/trans originally came in the truck ? Is it a long bed or short ? what are the 2 first letters of your vin ? is the trans cross member that's in it now rivited in ?

Post a picture of the trans cross member.

Re: 292 Engine mount help

Another assumption… actually I recall reading it somewhere. Are the driver side mounts for a SBC the same or different as a driver side 250/292 mount? I thought they are the same but now I don’t believe so. I’ve studied the pics you posted LockDoc but I can’t say with 100% certainty that they are the same or different. Thx!

Re: 292 Engine mount help

And yes, I do believe that my transmission is mounted in the wrong location. Maybe?? It looks like there is some missing hardware on the transmission x-member.

Re: 292 Engine mount help

OK , The truck was originally a V8 4x4 with a 350 ? and you removed the 350 and want to use a 292 in it's place ?

If that's your plan you'll need the Super rare 292 4x4 front engine cross member that's made from inobtanium . The only one I know of is owned by 68OrangeSunshine .

Post a picture of the trans cross member.
Originally had a 350 V8, long bed, 2wd. Transmission x-member is not riveted in and is missing a few bolts. When I removed the pax side 350 mount (mounted in the 2 forward holes) one of the bolts wasn’t factory. That random bolt and the lack of transmission x-member bolts makes me think the transmission isn’t properly located.

No, it’s originally a 2wd. Yes, I want to do a 350 to 292 swap. Why….I’m not sure if we’ll ever know why!?!?

I think I have one of those 4x4 cross members out in the garage but with SBC mounts. Let me go check.

Here’s the 4x4 x-member. This is from a different project that’s long gone.

Here is a picture with the different mounting locations. The I6 and V8 cross members are different also.

So the transmission x-member was originally riveted? If so mine has definitely be removed at some point.

The difference in the V8 and V6 holes looks like it’s about 3.75”, about how far I need the transmission to move back so that the the engine mounts line up on the pax side.

Yes, all transmission cross members were riveted.

So the transmission cross members are different too from V8 to I6? I didn’t realize that. Thx for all the info! It’s like a big puzzle! A greazzy oily dirty puzzle!

It does help, thank you! It looks like I need an I6 driver side mount. Just found a 250/4 speed combo on FB market place for cheap. He’s doing an LS swap so maybe I can get the mount, 4 speed, and transmission cross member later today.

Re: 292 Engine mount help

The auto and manual trans cross members are all different

The auto trans cross member you have should just slide back

the manual V8 and 6 trans cross members are different

You could just put a want to buy ad in the parts section for the drivers 6 mount ?

Are the manual V8 and I6 cross members the same? I read your reply like the automatic are one style and the manual (V8 and I6 are the same) are another style.

Re: 292 Engine mount help

I wish 12-Bolt.com made a proper L25 292 L6 Passenger Side mount, instead of their part that mounts in the Fuel Pump mountings and kills using a mechanical fuel pump, not to mention negating GM's design change on the 292 mounts to secure the drive train from excessive
lateral torqueing.
As to the transmission crossmembers, I can't help. My truck came with the L25 and SM465 from the factory, and I've never put an automatic transmission in the Stepside's drivetrain.
The L25 option [292 L6] was first available in Model Year 1963. I don't know of mounting configuration differences between '63 and '67. But my '63 core block was out of the donor truck when I got it.
