Re: Severe cold weather and a white Christmas

Twelve below and gusty this morning with wind chills into the negative 30s. That said, my Kubota snow blower is working great.

My daughter's kindergarten class takes outdoor recess at temps above 0F. Below zero they remain inside.

17 degrees here ,, so far very little snow ,some wind ,,and my shed where I keep my spare canned goods and other things is right at 43 degrees ,, I run two small freezers and 3 -100watt light bulbs in there .. with all the dams on the Snake River for electricity ,,so far not a worry ..

Re: Severe cold weather and a white Christmas

Wake up temp of 3* is a terrible time to find out the "emergency" heat setting of the home heat pump system DON'T WORK! I've never turned it on to the emergency setting before I guess. As no improvement in inside temp after a couple hours I went outside to find the unit was not running, at all, although the inside fan was on. Just blowing cool air. I'll have to get that checked out. I guess heat pumps are only good for fair to normal temps at best.

Emergency heat is the electric coils inside the unit, regular heat is the heat pump. I'm not sure exactly how it works though as far as if or when they both come on at the same time. My heat pump doesn't have coils as they weren't added.

Re: Severe cold weather and a white Christmas

Stepson left Buffalo early this morning he was going to leave tomorrow. But this is the forecast for Buffalo.

In Buffalo, this storm will likely at least jump near the top of the list of worst blizzards in the city’s history, if not even becoming the worst," AccuWeather Meteorologist Jake Sojda said. "Four to 6 feet of snow will fall by Sunday and coupled with wind gusts approaching hurricane force [74 mph or greater] to create enormous drifts and impossible travel."

Re: Severe cold weather and a white Christmas

I have the RV parked here beside us in the warehouse. I just went out and checked to see how hard it would be to run a hose from the diesel generator exhaust outside in case the power goes down.

We have a backup plan.

I'm sorry, but you couldn't pay me enough to live in Buffalo. It's not that I hate winter, but those poor people get hammered all the time. Not for me.

I put in a heat pump in the spring so I was nervous about how it was going to do since the ones I've had in the past were terrible. But it kept my house at 69 degrees with no heat strips. I read when heat strips kick in the outside unit won't run at the same time.

Re: Severe cold weather and a white Christmas

yesterday I was driving on a road along a reservoir with tall dense white pine forest lining the road. I had seen very little blow down along my route, just small pieces here and there. I noticed the movement of a tall pine coming down and stopped just short of where it fell. It would have fell right on my truck if I hadn't noticed in time. I probably could have gunned it and made it through, but that seemed foolish. The tree shattered up well enough that I could clear it away myself without tools and get the heck out of there before another one fell

The rain stopped before the big temperature drop, so no snow at all. and the wind dried the roads a good bit before he deep freeze. Also, the hiway dept. was able to spread salt during the time after the rain. But boy is it cold?? 5* here this morning with gusts off and on.

These weather people are taught to add in drama. Especially the just weather stations like Accuweather or The Weather Channel. Harder and harder to watch them for me. I'm glad we still have an older weatherman in Baltimore who doesn't interject the drama, just well explained weather forecasting. If it doesn't do what he predicts you will know that was possible and why. It's actually helpful. None of this "worst in history" or "approaching hurricane speeds". It's not a hurricane so a professional should not be using it here. Is it hard to say gale force winds to be accurate?

Back in '83 we had the same type of weather event. I think it was even worse. On Christmas Eve in '83 the temps dropped 70 degrees in a matter of hours. Doors frozen shut, high winds, everything frozen up solid, diesel fuel gelling, high snow drifts (in the mountains), spent a lot of Christmas getting vehicles started and moved around. I don't remember anywhere near all the hype we are seeing with this one.
