This is the view from my deck this morning. At 8 degrees, it’s the warmest of the past few.

Merry Christmas to all!

With weather like that, a man can sit on his front porch in his boxers at the end of the week.

Re: Severe cold weather and a white Christmas

Last night ,,,Christmas Eve it rained and froze on top of packed snow after I got to the daughters.. I only had to drive 2 miles and home again after the rain froze on top of the snow ,,and yes it was slicker than all get out coming home.. that was after I had to scrape the windows from ice and warm up the car.. I did not even come close to guess how many cars would be out on the highways Christmas Eve.. intersections was backed up more than during a week day and these intersections are stop sign all 4 ways ,, "NO" green yellow red lights ,, It seems it gets harder to handle the older I get.....

Re: Severe cold weather and a white Christmas

I ran errands in town on Christmas Eve. Driving into town I felt like the only one out. No other cars on the road. I wondered if it being so cold even kept last minute shoppers home and people got to relatives early. I get into town and that's where all the cars and people were. Parking lots full and people walking into each other. I made it through that and got back home. There was something I really wanted to get from the county seat, so off I went again!. I only had one stop and traffic didn't seem bad at all.

For Christmas we drove up and back to Grandma's house. It's colder up there. They have snow, too. I packed along warm gear in case we had a breakdown. thank goodness we didn't need it.

Re: Severe cold weather and a white Christmas

It is 23 degrees right now and it started snowing about 30 minutes ago.

They say it's going to get up to 32 degrees.

Well, I guess I will be in the house again today.

I hope all you NY fellas are doing alright.

Think 55 was the total for the storm across the country . So far 27 have died in Erie county most in the Buffalo area. It's terrible people froze to death stuck in thier cars or trying to walk to shelter from their homes after the power went out. Just heartbreaking

Most of the state had bitter cold but very little snow. It's still snowing in Buffalo and Watertown NY Tug hill plateau area is used to snow

Going to above average end of week into next . By next Wednesday 55° where I live but it will warm even in Buffalo so big time snow melt and flooding

Re: Severe cold weather and a white Christmas

The power going out in such cold is terrible, life threatening when for so long. Just terrible.

And I always think of the linemen out in all that weather working to get power fixed back up. They deserve great praise.

Was watching the news and the power company was stating that they couldn’t send people out to start repairs until the winds were under 30 mph . But really they can’t get around anyway all the roads are blocked with abandoned vehicles some were emergency vehicles

Our lights flickered a couple of times over the course of the storm but never went out . There were sporadic outages around us. Stove has been cranking all weekend and today .

Yikes. That’s really awful.

Was the temperature a record low, or was this the “worst” storm due to the number of fatalities?

I'm not sure what they go by, but the sharp sudden drop in temperature combined with the high winds is what made this storm so bad, even without snow. Areas that got snow combined with that wind had blizzard conditions. In upstate New York they have continued to get snow and winds. It's not even over yet for them. Where I am we were very lucky. The rain had stopped before the cold blast, so no ice on trees and powerlines. Just really frickin cold, and some still lost power due to downed trees

Re: Severe cold weather and a white Christmas

Down here we just got rain, but it was a whole lot of rain. The ground was soft so a lot of trees blew over causing downed lines. Anything wet froze tight but fast. I timed out when to open my vehicle doors once freezing started but before they froze shut. Been there done that.
