I've always kinda wondered this too, but the gate and the gate hardware is production stuff. The truck is a '67 judging by the dash cluster and knobs.

Whoever did it had a lot of time involved in it!

Could there have been a finish that would have lasted longer
what the weight was compared to the steel bed.
