History - On this Day

Thought a history thread might be interesting.

Today marks the 78th anniversary of the end of the (more than two year) Leningrad Siege during WWII. Was reminded of this by a Russian friend. Hundreds of thousands of civilians died.

My cousin married a guy whose parents had been in a concentration camp. I'm not sure which one. I was just a kid when I met them.

They still had the numbers tattooed on their hands or arms. I cant remember where. It's been a long time.

But I do remember how nice they were. Just the nicest people you'd ever want to meet. After all that they had been through they were still positive happy people.

I'd like to think that I learned something from them about keeping your chin up in the face of adversity.

But I still complain when my phone isn't charged. Dumb things like that. I have to remind myself that some had it a lot worse.

Re: History - On this Day

When I was working, I worked an area of town that had a lot of Jewish people. I met three survivors. Each one still had the tattoo on his/her arm. They were very faded, but still there. I was able to speak to them about what they remembered, but only for a short time. The last one was an old man. He was very nice. I just about started to cry when he was talking to me about what he remembered enduring. It was terrible.

Waylon Jennings, who was playing bass for Buddy Holly, gave up his seat on that plane to another musician.

And they were riding in a 1947 Beechcraft Bonanza. My father in law had a 1960 V tail Bonanza and it was a great plane to fly in. But never in a snowstorm

He gave up his seat to the Big Bopper and jokingly told Holly “I hope your plane crashes!” It haunted him for the rest of his life

Re: History - On this Day

Does it still exist? I remember my mom used to read it when I was a kid. It was headquartered in Pleasantville, NY. I think I have the name right. On our way to Maine in '77 we stopped in at a friend's cousin's place there and I saw where it was. There is some other history

As far as I know it still exists. However the last time I looked at one it was a far cry from what it had been. Half as thick and a quarter of the quality of the magazine I remember

What about Reader's Digest Condensed Books? Did she have those as well?

No, I don't recall her reading those. She was and still is an avid reader. Very wise for her years, and that is 92! (in May)

I remember the magazines she read, as well as my dad. They were both do it yourselfers. They were part of the craftsman (craftsperson) renaissance movement of post WW2. As the world became so about being modern, there were those who saw the value in not letting go of home made skills. Hmmm... sounds like me now!

Feb 7, 2020 Dr Li Wenliang, a Chinese Ophthalmologist passed away at 33 years of age. He was one of the first to raise the alarm about a new outbreak of SARS on Dec 30, 2019, later to be discovered to be a new virus, Covid 19. He died from the disease after being exposed to a patient unknown to be infected

Yes. It was helpful. It was an advertising venue as well. "As seen in TV Guide". You knew you had arrived if you got that seal of approval

Re: History - On this Day

On THIS day, Feb 8, 2022 that is, a piece of history was made in the small town of North East, Maryland located in Cecil County. Officer Goodyear was awarded commendations for her bravery by Governor Hogan. North East is located in northeastern MD at the top of the Chesapeake Bay. There is a time of day, twp times a day, during the school year where drivers must take into account the presence of school children making their way to school. Some walk and some stand at the side of the road waiting for their bus. There's a whole lot more to this than "Got to get to work" and "That bus is making me late". If these two things matter that much than leave earlier!

That's horrible. In this case it was rainng, no less. What ever happened to slowing it down on wet roads? The speed limits are based on ideal conditions.

Re: History - On this Day

It seems like the guys with the jacked up 4wds around here speed up when it's raining. That and BMWs, Mercedes, well, you get the idea. I don't think that it was raining when she got hit. I'd put money on someone staring at their cell phone, though. Somebody looks up at the last second. I was out for a walk today, and got off the sidewalk because I could see this young knucklehead coming my way walking on the sidewalk, looking at his cell phone, thumbs tapping away at the buttons. I told my wife that I'd like an old step side truck that I can fix myself and rely on not to have weird electronic problems like she has with her newer car, and I will have, eventually, with mine. She pointed out that old trucks didn't have airbags, etc. I told her I'd just put sections of railroad track on it for bumpers. Hah! Hit this!

Re: History - On this Day

We survived without airbags until they came about. I'll continue to survive without. Sure, some didn't survive, and the air bag has saved some lives. I don't believe the fatalities on the roads have changed in total with all the new safety devices and design features. The odds that the air bag will be the device that saves are minimal. There are 1,000 ways to die in a car. I do my best to protect myself from all of them. The ones I have no control over, well there we are back at the odds again. It seems to me, the more safety they build into cars, the more people figure out new ways to kill themselves, or others. If nothing else, I have to wonder if people don't get a false sense of safety causing them to, consciously or unconsciously, to be more careless. These electronic devices of convenience sure do aid in people becoming less patient and to have greater expectations than reality dictates. The poor driving is a reflection of that. Also, these things put people into their own world rather than part of their surroundings. The result is selfish driving habits rather than civic.

The same thing that happened to looking more than 10' in front of your car, it's gone. If people would actually LOOK down the road, as they are supposed to, a lot of these "accidents" (which really aren't, they are collisions), wouldn't be happening.

So true. Try being observant. It never hurts. Another thing is "Think first". I always wanted to get bumper stickers that said that. I'm sure that woman was thinking after she hit that officer
