Re: Hey Tim!

Thanks a lot, Leon . It got to almost 70 yesterday, and that was a cloudy light scattered showers day. It really sucked. So strange to not be cold. It had my nature in a jumble. Just too dang comfortable for a crappy day. So comfortable it wasn't even crappy.

Woke up yesterday, checked the local news channel website for weather, as I do all mornings through winter, and when I need to know the rain situation other times. They are very reliable, second only to the actual NOAA report. The models showed this storm passing through below this area by a safe margin. Of course, on Sunday the report is a bit slack. That was the Saturday evening report. I was visiting friends and they were saying we might get some snow. Hmmm... things must have changed. I get a multimedia text from an old girlfriend, now simply a friend, who lives in Virginia where I figured the snow would hit. "Looks like we have snow on the way. This is only one model". It showed it hitting here for sure, 4-6"! The local report last night said start around 11pm, stop around 11am, 3-4". A long phone call with a friend in CA kept me up till just after 11. Nothing yet. My natural alarm clock (the lower one) had me visiting the bathroom a little after 2, no snow. Just got up at 5, there is a light covering and I see it's falling steady at a slight angle driven by a light wind in the light of the pole lamp outside. I just walked out the door to the driveway, not sticking to the stone or road out front. And now a word from our sponsors

First snow of the year as well as the season. I also noticed the predicted temps in the 7-day have been taken down to 30s-40s all week. Before they felt we would get snow it was high today about 40, tomorrow about 45, then back to balmy mid-50s or even higher by late in the week. That's how it goes here in the Mid-Atlantic. The cold NW wind gets beat out by the warm SW drift up the Appalachian Valley from the Gulf. We'll get a cold front out of the NW, bringing the temps down 10-15* until the SW drift pushes it off to sea. But once we get a covering of snow the NW starts winning out. This may not stay around to be the one that draws that line. We'll see. Up to now we haven't had a hard freeze. Barely a freeze at all. Maybe light ice on puddles, if we had any. It's been dry and December was, I believe, the driest on record. Whatever happens here on out, this winter will be a short one. Did you hear that, March lion and lamb?

Re: Hey Tim!

They are still predicting we will get between 1 and 78 inches. they never get the eastern shore forecast right unless they report it after coming inside from seeing it.Had a fine dusting come down about an hour ago but switched back to rain.

We were supposed to get a "Big storm'....Never happened. Just a light dusting of snow. All it was was cold. I was kind of disappointed. The lake is so dry. It's pathetic.

Leon. Send some of that snow over here.

Found yourself a nice little pocket this time, ey?

I took the back way to the next state road that has access to I-70, then I-70 to work. The snow was just a trace by the time I hit that road. There was less and less till nothing by the time I was at the interstate. No snow at all in the Monocacy Valley. I'm at the ridge to the east and Catoctin Mt is on the west. It was white but no snow to be seen where I worked. Heading back after work, as I got back to Mt. Airy, just as much snow as before work. About 2", no big deal.

Re: Hey Tim!

Im over this snow, you can have ours too. Finally got some rain yesterday, not enough to get rid of the snow, but enough to make me go out and get all the snow off my truck so I could go to work today after ten days off. Got up this morning, snowed another three inches ... Ugh. Cleaned the snow off again and trudged through the snowy and sludgy roads to work.

Tim I'm always glad when it doesn't snow. But it looks like I'll be putting the plow and chains on the truck soon

Re: Hey Tim!

At 130 yesterday afternoon we barely had a dusting on the ground. At 430 we had 5" on the ground. Just barely made it south of the heavy snow line. Just to the north of us some got 9" or more

Re: Hey Tim!

I'm sure you are happy when the snow misses you, Mark. You are in the path of a lot of the lake effect stuff and above the fluctuation point known as the Mid-Atlantic. That's me, Mid-Atlantic. Land of variety.

Yeah Richard, the storm was a well defined band. It did fluctuate a bit, but you either were in the path or outside. This area was just outside yet not so far. Close enough that the higher elevations got a couple inches. Parrs Ridge is just that, a ridge not a mountain. But it is prominent enough that it is the summit/divide of the piedmont region. The western side of Monocacy Valley, Catoctin Mt, is part of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The further east it got worse, with the coastal Plain catching the brunt of it.

The part of I-95 that got jammed up is in Norther Virginia south of Washington, DC. That section from Fredericksburg to DC is traffic jam city on the most beautiful day. I avoid it like the plague. I haven't been on that part of I-95 in over 25 years. When I'm coming up from the Carolinas I hop off at Fredericksburg onto US17 which takes me to US15, US340 to Frederick, MD, and East on I-70 to home. Skirts the whole issue. I hear about DC traffic and that's about it. " People drive, I mean sit, in that mess five days a week. See ya, wouldn't wanna be ya" . Can't imagine with snow.

My old girlfriend is in Spotsylvania, near Fredericksburg now. They got 12". there's a chance for snow tonight. Richard, you may be in that path as well. It's a question if it will be rain, snow, sleet, or raiowleet . You know, the weather that sounds like a fancy salad on a menu, 'wintery mix". At BWI Airport (Baltimore for the rest of you), today was the first day since last February that it went below 40. Might be a record. Supposed to hit 45 tomorrow and up in Cumberland (in the Appalachians you all) it's supposed to hit 50. Crazy stuff, but ain't that normal now? Our snow is all melted off this evening, except shaded areas. Thirsday night it's supposed to snow again. Starting to be winter now I guess. 32 and sunny on Saturday. Woo Woo!

Got up to 37º here today. Temperature is dropping now and the wind has picked up. It will gust between 35 and 45mph tonight and tomorrow. That will give us -15º to -25º wind chills tonight and tomorrow. We have had a lot of wind so far this winter. Sounds like you folks out East are supposed to get some strong wind Friday or Saturday.... I didn't mean to send you THAT much of the white stuff...

Re: Hey Tim!

And I'm supposed to believe that? I see your plan. Blow all your snow off onto my place. Why I oughta...

Last night the coast was supposed to get some crap, er snow. So Richard, didja? We are 100+ miles from there and north. No mention tonight of any in this region last night. But where I hop on I-70 is the summit of Parrs Ridge. It must be just high enough that it caught a dusting up there that no one else did. As I got on the hiway I noticed snow blowing around on the roadway as trucks flew by.

Tomorrow night into Friday morning they are calling for 2-4". We'll see. It's now acting like winter, but actually what would be considered mild if we had been having winter weather like we're supposed to

It's been dry here. But it gets cold. Really cold (at least for me) I've already burned though a cord of wood in my wood stove and my electric bill is going to be a monster because I've been running the heater non stop, and the house is only marginally warm.

Spring. where are you? I'm sick of winter. Bring on summer so I can complain about the heat.

Re: Hey Tim!

And now you'll have two to heat. Or will that just be open for the warm months?

I pay for my heat year 'round, average payments. Not as bad that way, except during summer would be so cheap if I just bit the bullet and paid the high bills in winter. It sure is nice to have freezing outside and comfyness inside

30° cloudy and the house is at a comfy 72° well to my wife I like it around 65 to 68° . Only used a little over 2 cords usually by January I've used over 3 . Been relatively warm

Re: Hey Tim!

Snow tonight, 2-4". Well, that was this morning's forecast. I guess I should have checked before posting. Good this we can edit, cuz ya never know! People are all up in a tussy at the food stores. I went in just for light cream for my coffee, only because I ran out this morning. As usual, Tim just moseys on in like any other day when it hits him, "Did I really expect there would be any after the hoarders ripped through?". There was not a single option for any type of creamer what so ever at Safeway. But that's the yuppy store anyway. I ride over for Food Lion, the blue collar local/non-DC suburb transplant store, and they had a good variety. Also far more relaxed. I just like the Lucerne light cream, reason why I checked Safeway first

I've already put a dent in my second cord. I had to get pine because it was all I could find. It's easier to light than oak but it burns way too fast so it goes faster. But you get what you get and that was what I could get.

It's been blue skies around here. But cold. Not as cold as you guys get but enough to make me shiver. I don't do well in the cold and I'm terrible at lighting fires. They always fizzle out on me. No one could ever accuse me of being a pyromaniac. Maybe just an unsuccessful pyromaniac. Much like women, fires do not cooperate with me.

So -4º was our high for the day today with a 15- 25mph wind. I don't like this stuff....

I spent the afternoon cleaning the shop. It's amazing how much the house and buildings creak, groan and bang when it gets this cold. They must contract a lot.

Tim, it sounds like you guys are supposed to get another one after this one, possibly bigger.
