250 Power Steering Pulley Help

I have been slowly cobbling parts together to add power steering to my 1969 GMC with a 250 cid. I thought I had found the correct pulley, but after installing it, it is off about 1/2" - 3/4". The PN on the pulley I have is 354324AB.

I'm hoping someone smarter than me will chime in and tell me I need ****** pulley and you can get it at (insert web site here)

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Re: 250 Power Steering Pulley Help

Looks like that is for the later model 250s. There is a bigger space on the crank pulley between 1st and 2nd pulley groove compared to the earlier ones. This is what mine looks like before I hooked all the accessories to engine (77 era block).

I currently have custom aftermarket brackets on mine, but your power steering bracket looks like it is for the later model integrated head which would push it out like that too. Hard to tell since I no longer have factory accessory brackets.

NOTE: 2nd picture is mine when stock, the steering pulley went to the 3rd, crank pulley, AC was 2nd and alt was first pulley.

Re: 250 Power Steering Pulley Help

Check these 2 pulleys from Rockauto. One is a double pulley and the other is a set back pulley, supposedly for a I6.

Re: 250 Power Steering Pulley Help

Those Lares pulleys look like they will work.

Here's where I had the same problem.

Start at Post 20 - http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s....php?p=7972779

I show what pulley I ordered on post 29 - http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...9&postcount=29

The Lares 165 pulley also states it's the same as GM # 3834720.

Are you sure you have the right pump? I thought our models used the bolt on pulleys? Your picture shows you using a press on tool?

Is the pulley that worked for you a bolt on style or press on?

Re: 250 Power Steering Pulley Help

It is a bolt on.

I have another complete set of brackets that has a pump with press on pulley(same PN 354324AB as yours). I have never had it on an engine so I don't know if it lines up.

I also have another press on DOUBLE pulley, that when I hold it up to the single like yours, seems like it would put the 2nd groove a full groove closer to the engine. Not sure PN. I think I got it in a batch off this message board, but can't find where.

My working setup is double groove alternator with PS belt on outer groove.

Re: 250 Power Steering Pulley Help

I was looking at your pictures and it appears you are using the brackets like shown in the middle row of my post

Middle Left - 354527
Middle Right - 355789

My pump that has the pressed on pulley like your also has those same brackets. On my setup with the bolt on pulley it uses the ones from the top row. That may be the difference in those brackets.

Are you sure you have the pulley pressed on all the way? Those pictures you saved from 1968C30 (https://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/...d.php?t=825218) look like the pulley is pressed on more.

Re: 250 Power Steering Pulley Help

If you look at bonestock3ott's pictures closer it appears he's got the pulleys with the gap in the middle he's using with his pressed on pulley.

The pulleys on my motor do not have the gap between the two grooves like the picture above.

I put the pulley so far on the pump that I almost damaged the shaft, so, yes, it was on all the way - and then some
It appears that I have the bracket on the top left and the adjuster bracket middle right.

It looks like you have the long snout pump on yours. When I put the PS setup on my '67 I6 I ended up using the short snout pump & everything lined up OK.

Re: 250 Power Steering Pulley Help

Looking at your picture above, it looks like you have the middle left bracket, not the first row left bracket.

My guess is, without having the balancer and the water pump pulley that have the gap in the middle, it won't line up.

Things you could try:
Double press on pulley(not sure which one)
Pump with bolt on pulley(not sure which one)

edit: I was working on my response when lockdoc replied. Locdoc have you got part numbers or vehicles that use the different types?

This is what I did as well. Replaced the pump with a bolt-on pulley type and reused the later reservoir and everything lined up. Also used the double-groove alternator pulley like mentioned earlier.

Can you give some details on what is a long snout VS a short snout pump? I've never heard of this before. Thanks

No part numbers. I just had a few different used pumps on hand.

It would be the distance from the face of the pump to the back of the pulley. I sold the truck. I will have to see what I have left for pumps in the morning.

Re: 250 Power Steering Pulley Help

I've been looking at power steering pumps online and can't find anything referencing different lengths of snout on the pump housings.

I'm convinced that the pumps with the press on pulleys were designed to line up with the different balancer and water pump pulleys that have the gap in the middle. I did a quick look on ebay and the balancers are available, but didn't see any of the water pump pulleys. Seemed like it was easily gonna cost a couple hundred dollars to go that way.

I'd try a 2 groove press on pulley like this:
https://www.amazon.com/Dorman-300-12.../dp/B000E321ZU

That's the cheapest I could find it. Also known as GM PN 14084343 if you want to look. Thought it might be better to pay more and buy locally so you could return it, if it didn't work.

It's worth a shot, thanks.

Send me your address and I'll send you this double press on that I have. It's kind of beat up, but would let you know if it works...

I just went and got it and realized it does have a part number 354325 - there are many for sale on ebay if you want to see what it looks like.

I'll send you this one though. It looks like someone used pliers to try to get it off the pump, that's where it's chewed up.

Re: 250 Power Steering Pulley Help

I guess I wasn't explaining why I think the double pulley will work. I also have a single pulley like yours and the outer groove on this pulley lines up with the groove on it and the 2nd groove is closer to the engine.

The double pulley worked! Thank you for the help, I really appreciate it.
I had to put a double pulley on the alternator, which fortunately I already had, and the outer groove sticks out farther than any other groove on my motor, but it works and that's all I was looking for.
