paint protection film

Has anybody used this 3M clear paint protection film? If so, how long does it stay looking nice? And I wonder how hard it is to remove & how it effects paint under it if need to replace every few years...
I really need it for inside doors on rocker sill where foot hits when getting in & out, and considering doing it on bottom 6" or so outside to protect from road debris pecks.

Re: paint protection film

That’s exactly what I did on my truck. All around the leading edges of the hood and fenders, bottom of the body and rockers, and the sils inside the door openings.

I had mine done around 2014/15. It was a daily driver for 4 years and 50k miles in MN. Garage parked overnight.

I had heard some of the older stuff would turn yellow when I had it done, but was told the current stuff they used was much better. Mine hasn’t discolored at all.

I’ve never had to replace any, so I don’t know if it affects paint when removed.

In the pics you can see it. There’s a line where dust collects that kinda shows the edges.

Re: paint protection film

I put it on the top of my tailgate where the cap door seal was rubbing on the paint . It's starting to ware and get dull after a year . I think it's more for the occasional rock or sand debris not for rubbing or foot traffic.

That looks good & especially for 6-7yrs old - did you put it on yourself?

Yeah that's what I'm scared of for the inside rocker area.

I had an installer do it. After watching what it took around some of the more complex areas, I’m glad I had someone with experience do it.

I have it in the door jambs too. It’s held up well. Unless your using it as a step, in which case I’d be more worried about the door gasket, incidental contact really doesn’t seem to harm it.

Good to know - thanks so much!

I'm kind of thinking that it's doing exactly what you want it to. If it's getting dull, then it's saving your paint from being on the way to getting dull. Plus, if you want to, you can probably polish out some of the scratches in the film, as well as make it more slippery against your canopy door seal.

I'm thinking it would work the same way on the door sills. Might get some rub marks that you could possibly polish out, but it's way better than rub marks and scratches in the paint.

Re: paint protection film

Interesting idea for the rockers.

Good question if it ruins the paint. Doesn't seem it would, but taking it off might

My 2005 Trundra had the 3m installed new. It was a daily driver and garaged for the first 15 years and held up well. But when I kicked it out of the garage for my project truck the 3M was soon unappealing, spider webs or the like throughout, no longer clear, especially on the hood. Seems it was still doing what it was supposed to. The truck was black.

Re: paint protection film

I used a Xpel paint protection film on the rockers, behind the tires and on the bed rails of my Jimmy. It has been on there about 7 years and the only spot the is starting to come off around the edges is on the passenger side rocker sills that my wife uses as a step to get in. I’m glad it is on there or it would be all scratched up. I plan on using it on my current K20 build as well.

That was money well spent, truck looks great.... you have to look close to even see it.

Yes its protecting the paint just what I wanted. But its wearing out fairly quickly on a truck thats hardly used.

Re: paint protection film

I’ve got it on the leading edge of the hood and the quarter “gills” on my 2010 Camaro. Couldn’t be happier with it. Definitely does it’s job especially on the quarter gills. I don’t have any pictures that really show it off unfortunately.
