Corn Dogs and Sushi

My question is have your tastes changed?

I never liked corn dogs or sushi.

Now I eat them all the time. And I mean all the time. My taste has definitely changed.

How could this happen? I didn't like them before.

Am I the only one? Things that I liked just don't do it for me anymore and things I disliked do.

I’ve always liked both. Corn dogs with mustard and sushi with wasabi

Re: Corn Dogs and Sushi

Nope...not eating any dead minnows. No brussel sprouts, cooked cabbage or liver. Green peas need to be in a soup or pot pie. If they're on my plate they will wind up in the garbage where they belong. Never liked those things and at 68 years...I don't reckon I ever will. Don't much care for refried beans either. Takes a lot of tequila for me to get past those nasty things.

If you like corn dogs you gots to try jalapeno corn dogs....Pretty damned good.

Re: Corn Dogs and Sushi

About the only thing I will still not eat by choice (manners say if someone who doesn't know me offers it, I will make it go down....unless a dog is near by), but okra, greens, grits and squash are those that I will not eat. Otherwise I am pretty good with most things. I am not very good with real spicey, so I avoid it, but will eat it once in a while.

Re: Corn Dogs and Sushi

I still have the taste buds of a three year old (most, I know there are exceptions). I only like the basic veggies, corn, peas, green beans, but I also like asparagus. No way in heck I would eat sushi, I hate it. I eat very little fish in general. Mostly meat and potatoes kind of person. Never liked corn dogs even as a kid.

Re: Corn Dogs and Sushi

Wife loves corn dogs. I can't eat 'em, or regular hot dogs, either. There's that old George Carlin schtick, "Ever burp the flavor of a hot dog you ate three days ago? That was almost puke!" Sushi I can eat, but don't really care for it. There has to be cooked fish in it. Not sure that qualifies as real sushi? I'm talking like California rolls.

Re: Corn Dogs and Sushi

I like all foods I ever used to and I keep discovering more. I have to admit my mind can be biased enough to close my eyes to trying something new. How can I never hear of a food, then all of a sudden it's everywhere and everyone is eating it. I have an attitude about the fickle trendiness. Get with what's good and stick with it. But it's food, and meant to be enjoyed. So the open minded part of me (sometimes) gives in. I still never tried Calamari. I think I never will. Sounds like fish bait to me. But my daughter and son got me going on sushi, which also used to be fish bait to me. I am still particular about which I will eat.
My son who still lives at home, has been in Nashville since right after Thanksgiving. He had this hummus in the refrigerator. It was garden veggie flavored. I never even like the sound of it, sounds like forest floor! I grew up in a large family and I guess that's why I never waste food. I also know cream cheese is a killer. Not your heart healthy food. I had some smoked salmon that never got eaten. I also bought tghis gluten-free bread, small slices, because my sister needs gluten free. I toasted some up, used the hummus (not the dirt) and smoked salmon. I WANT MORE!!
I never made oriental diners and avoided rice, other than Cajun rice and red beans. "You're always hungry and hour later". Yeah, whatever. My younger son is into Japanese culture, so I (not to mix up oriental cultures or anything) started making stir-fry dished and I'm not sure I don't like it more than him.
I love a lot of food. Not hard to please at all. Calamari? Me? Uh Uh, nope, not never no way!

I like california rolls too, which is all that plus avocado.

Re: Corn Dogs and Sushi

I've only had sushi in Thailand and I thought was great. Raw tuna sushi.
I tend to stay away from the sushi made at the local mini-mart.
In regards to corn dogs it all depends on the hot dog inside the corn. Typical mini-mart corn dogs have pretty low quality hot dogs.

Re: Corn Dogs and Sushi

When one of my sons was going to San Jose SU, he and his buddies would be out and about, and one of them would want to go to 7-11 for a hot dog. There was a guy selling sausages from a cart that were way better, and for less money. Some of the guys would still go to the 7-11 and have that dog that's been on that rotating assembly line right up to (and maybe beyond) the OSHA limit.

Yeah. I'm going to try and condense it. The list is getting long.

I had to call my auto insurance agent the other day. The first words out of her mouth were Paul, what did you buy now?

What can I say? I like cars.

Every stand? Whoa, you need to go on one of those eating competitions.

I went to the fair and got a brisket sandwich. Mainly because the smoke coming out of the smokers smelled so good. But it smelled better than it tasted. The meat was dry and the bread was stale. I doused it in BBQ sauce but that didn't help. But I ate it because it was expensive and there was no way that I was going to throw it out. But it filled me up and I had to walk past other food places that I would have rather had with a full belly.

I went to Pomona one year. Me and my buddy were walking past the side of a food truck. A guy came out with a bunch of burnt ends an asked if we wanted them. That they were just going to throw them out. Heck yeah!

Those ends were so good. Now I see the food shows and burnt ends are all the rage. Go figure. They were throwing them away before. Times change.

Re: Corn Dogs and Sushi

Why do so many think sushi is raw fish? It can have raw fish, like tuna, salmon or eel... but many have shrimp temptura, veggies, cream cheese, spicy mayo etc.

sushi: a Japanese dish consisting of small balls or rolls of vinegar-flavored cold cooked rice served with a garnish of raw fish, vegetables, or egg. (google definition)

hehe they said balls...

never been a fan of corn dogs. I peel the cornbread off and toss the rest. Hot dog on a bun is fine.

There's a place in Kernville that has Poke Nacho's. Poke is raw tuna. I know, I know, it sounds gross but it's really good. I went out on a limb and ordered it and was glad I did. The only thing I didn't like was the price. But my girl was picking up the tab so whatever.

Like Tim said. Sometimes it's good to try new things. You never know. I used to go to this little dumpy joint in Compton. So close to the railroad tracks that the building shook when the trains went by. You know the type of place.

So I go in. Cross my fingers. And order a shrimp and octopus cocktail in the best Spanish that I can speak which is pretty bad.

I had never had octopus before. But dang if it wasn't good. Really good. I became a regular at the place and always ordered it. I wish I could find some octopus around here. I miss it.

Re: Corn Dogs and Sushi

We used to got Kauai every year for couple of weeks and we always bought poke. They had a few different flavors.
I traveled a lot for work both foreign and domestic. I always ate what the locals ate figuring it hadn't killed them. Never got sick.
Anyone like kimchi? I spent a year in Korea and learned to like it a lot. My brothers wife is Korean and she sends me a kimchi care package a couple times a year.

Re: Corn Dogs and Sushi

good kimchi is life-rearranging.

i spent a lot of time in china at a previous job and had some great stuff (mostly duck, prepared several ways) and some not so great stuff (pig nose cartilage, served cold). the soups were always safe, the "flash steamed river prawn" was NOT, and i missed the high sign.
