NASCAR: Next GEN Cars

NASCAR is introducing a 'new' car for '22. I don't follow the series like I used to but I do check to see what they're tweaking changing as the times change:

No more solid rear axle w/the T/A suspension.

No more passenger-car (truck) based front suspension.

No more traditional Saginaw-box style steering.

'Modular' frame construction consisting of the main driver compartment w/cage; bolt-on front frame clip; bolt-on rear frame clip; & bolt-on F/R bumper/impact sections.

I also heard rumors of moving away from steel wheels to something larger diameter & different material.

Haven't really followed NASCAR closely for quite some time. Seems the org. is getting further and further from the roots of it's heritage. Ahh, the days of Junior Johnson, Cale Yarborough, Richard Petty and the like. Too much in the way of restrictions and cookie cutter cars. No room for individual innovation and ingenuity to win the checkered flag. Just seems too mundane and contrived now days. I'm totally done with it.

Neither have I.

And what little I did watch, 99% of that ended when they went to the 'STAGES' within each race. I might watch part of the Daytona race, some of the road-course races (I like them better), & maybe some of the finale. That's usually if they're on when I'm @ lunch w/my buddies @ Hooters or similar. I definitely don't plan to watch a race.

When Sr. died I pretty much quit watching...all the changes they made were definitely not better in my book, I rarely watch any sports anymore, I think most everyone knows the reasons for that

I'm an avid stock car racing fan.
This new car is pretty much an all new design.

Rack and pinion steering
18" aluminum wheels with one lug feature
14" wide low profile tires
Larger brakes all around
Driver's seat moved toward the tunnel about 3"
More foam inside driver's door skin
Differential/tranny transaxle at the rear
Independent suspension on all four corners with coilovers
All composite body panels
Vents in the hood
Diffuser under the rear pan
Split exhaust system, one pipe out each side again
Teams are allowed to have 7 cars
Most teams should have 2 completed cars by Feb
That's all that comes to mind at the moment.

Yeah, it's pretty much all different.

I havent paid any attention to NASCAR for a very long time. I did find a race not too long ago and watched for a bit. It was very confusing to me, what are these stages they are talking about?

And now when they say the new car is an all new design that confuses me too. So there is only one car that races now?

Ill go back and take the year I graduated from HS, 1977. Cars from the big three were pretty ugly that year. But when you go back an look at pictures or vids you can easily tell what kind of cars they were.

Yeah, it's pretty much all different.

Exactly right along with overall more power for most of the intermediate tracks (670) everywhere except Atlanta, Daytona, and Talladega will have the 670 package. The cars also look way more like their production brothers. Not just the same overall body with each manufacturers individual front and rear panels. The new car bodies are unique to each manufacturer. The numbers are Also moved foreword on the door along with a 6 speed sequential tranny replacing the long lived straight cut 4 speed. Just a few more major changes to add to the list.

I used to watch nascar religiously. When they started doing the car of tomorrow (which I was fine with, they were trying to make the sport safer because of dale) I started watching a little less... (but mostly because dale had passed, he was my guy) then Toyota Joined... and they started doing the crazy points and playoff system, but can't even leave it alone, it's been changed multiple times... I watched less and less... it got to where I was just wathing 'dega and daytona, maybe bristol... but I don't think I've watched a single race in 5/6 years. If they think this is what they need to do to move forward, good on them, but I've just lost interest.

I actually wrote a paper in college for a class on Nascar and improved safety measures due to dale's death.

The wife is a fan and I took her to some races last year and the championship races in Phoenix but I think we are done.

I didn't leave NASCAR, NASCAR left me.

The best Nascar races are the ones you pre-record on your T.V, (actually my buddy's) then fast forward thru all the B.S. commercials. You get a bird's eye view and slow-motion replays.

We used to be regulars at Las Vegas but it just got way, way, too expensive.

Of all the changes for the new cars, what bugs me the most is the single lug nut. Pit stops won't be as much fun anymore

One positive thing about attending a NASCAR event is that they allow bringing your own food and booze. Can tote your big cooler in there with ya!

You must attend a different NASCAR than us. The races we attended allowed no alcohol through the gate.

My experience is at Texas Motor Speedway. This was probably 5 or 6 years ago. We loaded up a couple coolers w/food and beer then brought them inside into the stands.

Safer is good, yes, but I'm really only bummed about the change because of losing the air gun sound to the tune of the 5 lug nuts. The air gun sound will still be there, but a different tone and flavor.

With all the safety improvements to the cars over the years, seems to me that the most dangerous part of a race now is during pit stops

Kentucky Speedway is about 10 miles from me and was built around 2000 when NASCARs popularity was high, but maybe starting to head down. It had a cup race for several years but has since lost it and more or less sits unused. Ford stored thousands of trucks in the parking lot that were awaiting chips for a while and Amazon, UPS and other also use the parking lot as a drop lot for box trailers.

No cash inside the speedway this past year. It was card or nothing. Beer was $18/can. I spent $50.00 on two burgers and fries.
