Found rare 16" 6 lug wheel. Need info

I picked up one of these over the weekend. I am normally in the squarebody section and have limited knowledge in the 67-72 stuff. It is my understanding they were optional wheels. I have done a lot of searching and can't really find any information about them other than they were optional. They seem to be really hard to find any info or pictures.

The tire is now broken down. I will try and get pictures of the stampings tomorrow.

Re: Found rare 16" 6 lug wheel. Need info

They are hard to find, general buying public rarely ordered the optional 16" steelies. More common to find on government spec'd vehicles. Those are the '71 and newer wheels, good for disc brake C or K 10's.

Thanks for the info. I have a friend that has parted out over 100 67-72 trucks over the years but he has never had any 6 lug 16" wheels. He does have a set of 5 lug 16" wheels

Will fit on older '62-'70 C or K 10's without disc brakes also, but technically correct for '71 thru '87 K 10's.

Re: Found rare 16" 6 lug wheel. Need info

I once owned a 76 K10 short bed that came factory with 16's. Of course at the time everyone preferred 15's and they were less expensive and easier to source. I replaced the 16s with a set of 15x8 chrome spokes, and I cannot recall where the 16s ever went, but I know they had a set of "gumbo wide mudders" on them, and the noise and ride was terrible. The wheels were listed as options on the spid.

Someone was selling a 5 lug 16” spare wheel & tire at the show in Tennessee.

I haven't ever seen those in person either. I have a friend that's supposedly parted out 300 67-72 trucks over the years and he has a set of 16" 5 lug wheels

I have the OEM 16" spare tire and wheel that came from under my '72 GMC C1500.

Beautiful restoration on the '68! I'm sure that one stood out in the crowd. It has the correct '62-'70 16" (rectangular ventilation slots) versus the original post '71-'87 (triangular ventilation slots).

They are the 16" wheels that came with my 1970, but are not listed on the SPID. There is an adapter on the speedometer cable at the transmission end, so I don't believe they originally came with the truck.

So, are these the "factory original" type?

Re: Found rare 16" 6 lug wheel. Need info

My '68 C/10 Stepside was originally optioned with 17.5 - 6 lug rims. Fleet truck. Listed on SPID. [17.5 x 5.25 rims.] It used 7.00x17.5 tires. I had to go to 8.00x17.5 tires in Mid-'70s when the 7.00 became unavailable. In the '80s I went to 8R-17.5LT radials.
At the end of the 20th Century, the tire shop told me my factory 17.5 rims were shot. [After only ~300,000 miles!] So they set me up on 6x16 rims, White Spokes, with 235/85/16 tires. This year I need a spare rim. I searched high and low, but no one had that size rim in 6-5.5 bolt circle. It turned out I had been sold Trailer Rims. I looked for a 6x16 -6 lug trailer rim and quickly found one for under $70. Even though it's a trailer rim, they've proven themselves in over 20 years, so I'm not worried abot it.

Re: Found rare 16" 6 lug wheel. Need info

Just came across this post. The green swb k10 in post above was my truck. I restored it. The 16” wheels are not on the spid. They came from my 67 k10 (which are on that spid)
