Re: GMC vs Chevrolet Hood hinges

for what year or style of truck?
here is a link to a thread that talks about a few differences and especially about hinges and mounting on the cab. hope it helps.
https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/...-cabs.1022047/
as a side note, the aftermarket stamped steel hinges work, but they are not always the best. sorta like all the aftermarket panels and parts. they aren't necessarily built to high standards. one of my hinges works fine while the other binds and causes the hood to settle down unevenly in a closed position. hopefully it "wears in" over time. I may try a billet set or look at how worn out my old set actually is. I replaced them because they were reasonably priced so I bought a set hoping for the best.....

Re: GMC vs Chevrolet Hood hinges

55-57 hinges have the spring attached to the hinge on both ends. 58-59 have the spring attached to the hinge on one end and the inner fender on the other end. these are fun to attach the spring. most guys will stretch the spring out under their floor jack, add some wooden wedges or something between the spring coils, then release the jack and see if they can get the spring onto the hinge and inner fender connections. then remove the wedges after it's installed. on my 57 aftermarket springs I installed them with a small prybar with the hinges mounted up and the hood on. at some point the attachment points are close enough together so it isn't too hard.
are you having mounting issues or just curious?

Re: GMC vs Chevrolet Hood hinges

FYI for anyone doing a search on hinges in the future.

Here are the hinges off my '55 after I cleaned them and repainted them.

Never ended up using them as I bought billet ones. DAMN expensive and another example of my project sliding down the "slippery slope" of expense!

Which years? The 55 to 57 are different than 58 and 59.

To my knowledge there isn’t a difference between chevy and gmc. Just a difference between years 55-57 and 58-59.

I'd have to look through a bunch of boxes in my overhead to see if I still have them. Even if I do it would probably be prohibitive to ship them across country.

Quick question about the difference between 55-56 and 57-59 hood hinges. I have a 55 hood going onto a 59 cab. Are the hinges particular to the year of the hood or the cab? Or do they interchange without issue, and it’s just a configuration change?

Re: GMC vs Chevrolet Hood hinges

Are you using the complete 55 nose? I don't think the 55/57 hoods will mate up with the 58/59 fenders.

My buddy put the early nose on a late cab maybe 25 years ago but he is in no shape to remember what flaming hoops he had to jump through .

I'm thinking one was done in one of the build threads but would have to search for an hour to find it.

Re: GMC vs Chevrolet Hood hinges

if you look at a new aftermarket cab they say the cab fits all the task force years. I know there are some differences with the wiper motor mounting between the vacuum and electric and the bump in the cowl is different. I think the hinges have the same pattern on the firewall though, they just have different hinge spring set ups as the 58-9 springs attach to the inner fender instead of being connected on both ends to the actual hinge. if you look at the factory assembly manual it has the diagram of the cab and firewall with all the holes and dimensions of each mounting hole. that should show if there is a difference between the late years. I have that diagram printed off somewhere in my truck file because I replaced the firewall so I had to redrill the holes. I don't seem to recall a different spec location for the late years.
are you going to use a late cab with an earlier front clip? the frame on the 58-9 is also longer and the rad support mounts will be further forward, thats not a huge deal though. again, the assembly manual will show the correct location dimensions for those parts. it is a convoluted diagram to figure out, and it takes several dimensions to add or subtract before you come up with the actual dimension sometimes, but it is do-able with the will to continue

Re: GMC vs Chevrolet Hood hinges

here is a link to the FAM. there is a diagram there with the firewall layout dimensions
https://www.trifive.com/d1/55-59Assy.pdf
section 1 sheet 40.01
it doesn't look like there are different holes for the different years but then sometimes there is a supplemental manual with updates like that and they wouldn't show in the earlier version like this one.

I bought billet hinges for my 53 3100. Definatly expensive but they sure are pretty. My slippery slope turned into a cliff.

Re: GMC vs Chevrolet Hood hinges

Thanks for the info mr48chev and dsraven. Yes, the whole front clip is from a 1955. I'm not sure about the rad support location as I haven't mounted the fenders and cab to the frame yet to see where it all lands. Time will tell. For now, it's good to know the hood hinges won't be a problem. I've recently been welding up my exhaust system and will post it on my build thread.

Re: GMC vs Chevrolet Hood hinges

look on the frame drawings and you can find the factory location for the rad support brackets and also the length of the frame required for the early front sheet metal. free download below
