Transfer case question

I purchased a case on ebay to replace my cracked one. Everything seems the same except there are no mounting holes for mounting bolts..what am I missing here ?

Re: Transfer case question

That's not really a "mounting point". A support brace goes from there, up the side of the engine block and across the starter. Most of them get removed during the first starter replacement and never reinstalled.

That's not right? I'm thinking about the ones from the cover over the flex-plate/torque convertor, going across the starter.

Re: Transfer case question

Those holes have a bracket that bolts to them and the frame with bushings. That bracket can be a heated topic amongst 205 lovers. Some associate the bracket to causing cracked transmission/transfer case adaptors and pitch them asap. Others swear they would never run without them because it’ll crack the adaptor… I’ve run them and not run them and never broke an adaptor… go figure. Point being those holes aren’t necessary if you don’t mind not running the bracket.

Maybe it's a later model that did not use the side bracket

So there is enough support with it just bolted to adapter ?

Re: Transfer case question

If you do end up using the side support I suggest you use the OEM rubber bushings and not the aftermarket poly bushings.

Re: Transfer case question

What did you pay for the case ? Small or large input bearing ?

I got a bunch of parts and cases to clean out .

As said brace rod holes or older got frame brace but they tend to brake adapter or tail on trans . If you need them just drill & tap them .

Re: Transfer case question

Not worth going through the effort to drill the holes out for the side mount. People can debate it but there's a reason GM stopped using the mount.

Again, for the effort it would take to drill out the housing I don't think it's worth it. A large amount of squarebody trucks never got that strut rod.

Re: Transfer case question

I always put the support rod back. GM continued the use of the bell housing rod up through 91 on the Blazers and Suburbans with the 208 and 241 t-cases. When I converted my suburban to a 4l80e I had to lengthen the rod for the longer transmission. It was the 205 ?square mount? that got the bad rap with breaking the adapter or the trans case, not the bell housing rod

In my.opinion that strut rod brace does a lot more good than the support bracket does., especially on a lifted truck.
