Best Edelbrock Carb on the market

I am looking for the best Edelbrock carb for my 350. It is a mild engine. Some head work and a cam swap and a performer style intake. Thinking of a 600 or 650 cfm. Have had there $250 version and was not happy.

Re: Best Edelbrock Carb on the market

1406, I'd say. 1405 if you want manual choke. Note the 1405 is tuned more performance than the 1406 out of the box. Google the difference on the rods/jets.

Re: Best Edelbrock Carb on the market

I would do a Edelbrock AVS.

It takes a bit more work to really dial it in, but it is easier to tune the air door. Also it has annual boosters to help with low response.

Put a 750 on a nicely built 350 with a friend, and it was really nice.

Re: Best Edelbrock Carb on the market

The Performer series EGR is a tad richer than the 1406 electric choke carb, and a tad leaner than the 1405 manual choke. It also probably has an extra vacum port or something too. If you don't use an EGR, and I dont know why you would, stick with a non EGR model.

Edit: Wasn't your motor dynotuned a bit back? It should be set up perfectly after having that done shouldn't it? My thinking is they would have dialed in your existing carb with the optimal air fuel ratio and changing that will likely be moving away from that ideal. I have found that Eddy manual choke carbs seem to always be on the too rich side of things (for a mild motor) as they come from the factory. They probably have to err on the side of caution I suppose. Running a hot rod too rich will cause problems over time but running too lean can do real damage, really quick.

Here’s the best eddy carb.
Not produced anymore but still available if you search for one.

Yes I have a quadrojet that I recently had dynotuned a while back and it is running fairly well but the big problem I am having is with the linkage. My transmission guy and I can not get my 700r4 to pull far enough on the tv cable. Because of that when I am on the freeway in overdrive when I push further on the gas it doesn’t downshift. The transmission guy is certain that if I get an edelbrock that he can get the linkage to work properly. As far as getting a Holly carb goes. He says that there linkage doesn’t have enough through to get the cable to work either.

Re: Best Edelbrock Carb on the market

You should find a better transmission guy!
Brackets are available for every popular carb used.

Re: Best Edelbrock Carb on the market

He is vary aware of that sight and didn’t think that those brakes and adapters would work for our problem. But at the time that website was not working well. Maybe I should push him a little harder. Before when I went to that sight it gave us both a fake warning that our phones had been hacked and we couldn’t move forward.

Also I don’t see any of my carbs part numbers listed in the types of brackets are meant for on the sight. Maybe I will have to contact them.

The carb part number is
17080507
2901 DNR
I had a similar problem when trying to buy needles.

Re: Best Edelbrock Carb on the market

They don’t go by specific carb numbers on there.
They go by carb types.
Like Holley 4165 or 4150.
Eddy 1406 afb or 1906 avs.
Quadrajet shows 1910 style.

What do you have under the gas pedal?
Do you have thick carpet?
That can hinder full throttle.

If you have someone push the gas pedal completely to the floor does your throttle on the carb open all the way?

O okay. So I should get the 1901/1910 not 1902/1903/1904/1905 version of the bracket.

Yes I am getting full throttle. What will happen if the carb linkage goes any further it starts moving in an upward motion and the cable doesn’t get pulled any further at that point and also Ceases to go in a linear motion which I am told is what the 700r4 requires. Here’s a photo of the current linkage.

Re: Best Edelbrock Carb on the market

I see you have another hole there to hook your throttle cable to. That’ll give you more motion.
And move your vac hose out of the way too.

Re: Best Edelbrock Carb on the market

Good.
As for which kit to get based on there supplied numbers, you’d need to contact them.
I suspect the numbers like 1901 etc are based on carb linkage differences. Not all quadrajets are the same. Linkage depends on type of trans. Turbo 400 or manual trans is missing some parts that a turbo 350 would need.

Just to add, I had an Edelbrock carb and 700r4. The BTO bracket worked well with that set up.

Re: Best Edelbrock Carb on the market

IMO the best Edelbrock carb for these trucks with a stockish 350 is the Quadrajet clone they made. Have one I installed on the motor I pulled out. Do not think it is available anymore.

Re: Best Edelbrock Carb on the market

I run a 1406 edy. on my5.3......very nice on the stocker. I have tuned the avs carb, on a buds truck.....liked it! I have also built & tuned the old Q-jet. It is more complicated to play with, but will flat (kick azz), when set up properly All said , i would rather tune a Holley carb! You can make em all work....just go for what you like, or what you are comfortable with longhorn

Re: Best Edelbrock Carb on the market

I have run a Federal Mogul Carter ''High Performance'' AFB 9635S on my '71 GMC's 350 since 1999, no problems. Equivalent to the Edelbrock 1405 [600 CFM]. I prefer manual choke.
Carter is out of business, so Edelbrock's ''Performer'' is a direct clone of the old Aluminum Four Barrel [AFB]. Edelbrock's ''Thunderer'' carbs are copies of Carter's Adjustable Vacuum Secondary [AVS] carbs. But the Carter AVS carbs had three-stage jets and metering rods -- which made for a tuneable mid range. Edelbrock dropped the 3-stage parts, and their Performers [AFBs] and AVS carbs use the same 2-stage rods and jets.
I also run an EDL 1404 on the 292 L6 in my '68 C/10 Stepside. 500 CFM is not too much for a .030 bored-out L6 at 296 actual cubic inches. The half-ton shortbed is pretty lively with that set up. [292/SM465/Corp 12 Bolt Posi @ 3.73:1]
I ran a 390 CFM Holley 4160 R8007 for 25 years in that rig. Never liked it.

Re: Best Edelbrock Carb on the market

I tried contacting the people from Bowtie overdrives. But they have not gotten back to me. If there brackets for my Qjet doesn’t work out I will probably get a 2405 or 7. It seams like everyone is out of stock right now.
