Re: Interest in Dummy Gas Cap Filler Neck?

I too believe patched holes take away from originality, it looks bare without it sticking out. I think your original looked great and without seeing under your grommet I'm not understanding what's going on. However for those that are still in body work stage it would be rather easy to have a welded flange on inside that could be tacked to inside of cab for mounting versus the retainer style. With that option the neck could be as Long as you wanted.

Re: Interest in Dummy Gas Cap Filler Neck?

Here are some images that should help show how the filler neck is attached. It is clamped onto the grommet. The step in the filler neck pushes on the outer lip of the grommet, and the welded bracket pushes on the back of the grommet. I've also included some images of what it would look like with a spacer that would shift the cap farther away from the cab. I think the spacer would make the filler neck look too fat. Opinions?

Re: Interest in Dummy Gas Cap Filler Neck?

If I was ever to move a tank I would want a dummy one. Why don't you measure one that's on a truck now and go with that length?

It has to clamp against something. That's the reason it is sticking out less than stock. If I simply make it stick out the stock length, then it would be loose without adding a spacer on the outside.

Re: Interest in Dummy Gas Cap Filler Neck?

Any reason you couldn't add a couple of washers or a small spacer between the filler neck part and the bracket where the bolt goes through to extend it out?

Re: Interest in Dummy Gas Cap Filler Neck?

I definetly think you have received the interest in the filler neck! Now it seems many would like it a bit longer, take your time and think it over. Maybe possibe maybe not! I have not looked at filler neck your using or how grommet fits the tube so I do not understand the adjustments. Would a large rubber style washer fit between cab and Grommet? All I know is when finished I would like a neck that holds in place. Yours looks great and will do the job.

The problem with doing that is that the larger portion of the filler neck that is outside would no longer be clamped against the grommet, so the filler neck would just be loose.

Yes, I agree that there is enough interest to justify making a batch of 10. Personally, I am worried that adding a spacer to the outside of the neck might look goofy. I need to see it in person, so I'm going to order some material for a spacer to test it out.

Re: Interest in Dummy Gas Cap Filler Neck?

I recommend that it not be so deep on the inside, have a wall just under the cap to make it idiot proof. I am sure that somebody not familiar with the truck would still try to fill it there since the gas pump nozzle would still fit inside and then have gas shoot back at them.

Re: Interest in Dummy Gas Cap Filler Neck?

I love the inspiration (and would normal jump in) but I'm having to go a step further than this. I plan to to convert mine to a power inverted 120v outlet inside the dummy gas fill. With a dual battery bank setup, it should be able to drive a sound system, compressor or other tools & accessories when parked for events. If you came up with that kind of setup, it would be worth chipping in for $400-500... even if it didn't include the inverter or dual battery setup.

Regardless, nice work.

Excellent point. The depth was mostly just me being lazy about cutting down the filler neck with the excuse of maximizing the volume of the hiding place. I might be able to simplify the design of the clamp if I make the filler neck very short.

That's a very interesting idea. I might be able to make it so it has a provision for adding a single outlet. I will look into it.

Something like this inside there connected to an inverter would be perfect. With all of the gas thieves around I would never put my spare keys in there when parked outside.

What's the part number for that outlet?

Edit:

I found it.

Perfect, Big Kev!

PJ, this would save me a lot of time and effort. Consider me part of the group!

Re: Interest in Dummy Gas Cap Filler Neck?

I modified the design to work with a power outlet. There would need to be two versions of the clamp plate though for those who don't want the power outlet. Here are some images of the power outlet version.

another option, just tack weld the gas cap on to avoid any accidental fuel nozzle dings and gas
