Re: Locking bearclaws

Hmmm.... so only have to slot that hole slightly and it locks from inside, though it can't be unlocked from outside. Driver must slide over to unlock passenger door.

OR, put a driver's side push button lock in ('55-'59's without any modification) and it CAN be locked/unlocked from outside. Have I got this right?

I installed two exterior locks. I didn't like reaching over to unlock, plus I look more gallant opening the door for my wife.

Re: Locking bearclaws

With a little reverse engineering, and wanting to put in new not worn out latch mechanisms along with a drivers side lock, I tore appart the old passenger side latch that held the locking part. Omitted from the drivers side so it was easy to figure out. Then opened up the new driver side. The new driver side, with a bit of tinkering and welding, could hold a 180deg reversed locking mechanism. A bit of micro-cutting and welding/filing later, a dry fit works the same as the passenger side. A complete opposite of the passenger locking piece. Can lock/unlock from inside and outside like factory passenger. Now have to find a local locksmith to re-key a single '51 lock to match the rest.
