Just got a 68 gmc

I know worthless without pictures ... But deal was just finished at dark. 68 gmc v8 -307 ram type power steering, power brakes, leaf springs with Dana rear end, no guages. Black paint , red interior. Question - I have core support to change four eyes to two ,should I or leave it? Also are there grills for this truck out there. This is first gmc and they are pretty scarce around here.

Re: Just got a 68 gmc

Leave it as a four, they're not as common and I think they're pretty cool. After I'm done with the c10 I'm gonna see if I can find a k10 or k1500 and make a gmc for next winter. I just prefer a lifted gmc clip to a Chevy. I need more money .....

Re: Just got a 68 gmc

I'm kinda partial to gmc's and I do love all of that chrome, but my favorite chevy front end is the 68. Heh, I'm not helping much here.... Damn it!

Leave it a gmc.

Re: Just got a 68 gmc

I have come to prefer GMCs, so you know what my answer is. I know one thing, not too many years ago it seemed most guys were changing GMCs to Chevys and I was about the only one saying keep them GMC and go find a 5x easier to find Chevy if that's what you want. Now, as these trucks have become even more popular, I see a whole lot of love for GMCs and people saying they wish they could find one. What I always say is, finding a GMC is like finding a Pontiac. I don't see people turning a Lemans into a Chevelle. And (maybe it's just me), an SS454 or Z/28 is a great find and are really cool cars but to find a similar GTO or Trans Am is way cooler. I'm talking '60s cars here.

If they're scarce around you, all the more reason to keep it GMC. Gotta be different to be better! That's what I did.

Re: Just got a 68 gmc

Nice Buy! Back then they actually were different trucks in they respect of options, trim emblems and particularly different in rear suspensions, available Leaf Springs versus Trailing arm Coil Springs, etc. My Red 67 ($600.00) started out leaf spring, 6 lug and wound up 9 inch Ford disc brakes front & rear 5 lug. Again Congrats on a nice truck find / buy.

Nice Truck! But to be technically correct, leafs were still an option on GMC's however it was standard and the norm for leaf option to be included on the GMC's. The biggest difference was the V6 GMC motors. Were they an option in the Jimmys? It would be neat to have a 305 lugger in a GMC and let the torque pull you around town at low RPM's!

Keep the 4! And do this:
Of course, you would have to re-locate the battery? And a re-wire of the headlights with a 2 headlight hi/lo beam.

Re: Just got a 68 gmc

I've heard people say a Repro Grill is over $500.00, but we just saw an entire, beautiful Front GMC clip go for $400.00. The stuffs around Arizona, check Craig's List, E-bay. Hey Mechanicalman is that a Real Thunderbolt or a Clone? Guess you could always use the New LMC type 5-3/4" bulb housing on the GMC and put a dual High/Low beam bulb in it, eh?

I also have a GMC and worked hard to put it back to GMC, it had been changed to a Bow tie. I also made all 4 eyes come on for the high beam

Well it looks authentic but then again I know very little about blue-bloods (fords) but love 64s. I was just looking for the first 4 headlight pic I could find that had inlet vents and I remembered seeing these back in the day and always liked them.

Yes I suppose if the 5-3/4 bulb would fit the core support and fit in the headlight surround that would be good lighting. Probably just a matter of joining or seperating some circuits to make the wiring work but I've not researched it. I just supposed there had to be a 2-headlight bulb system of similar size that you cold use that would fit that.

the 68 Chevy is my favorite grill, but GMC's are unique and the four lite chrome grille is nice. I would leave it and be proud

Not talking about changing core support, but finding a bulb for a 2-beam system that supports hi/lo beam that fits the cup on the existing core support.

Knock headlight ext off for the vents only. If you knocked it off for the beam it would be too far recessed.

There is a hi-lo and a hi in all 67-72 GMCs. The hi-lo is also what motorcycles use, like Harley XLs and FXs
