EZ Wiring Harness Help Needed

I have an EZ Wiring harness I'm installing in my 72 Blazer. I've installed a 5.7 Vortec complete with the serpentine system from a 98 Silverado, which means I'm running a 100 amp alternator.

The question I have is about two red wires, one marked Solenoid Power and the other marked Alt Power. The Solenoid Power wire is a heavier gauge, and I believe it draws power from the battery terminal on the solenoid to feed the fuse panel. I believe the other one is the charging wire. The wiring diagram for a 72 shows power coming from the alternator being split, with one wire going to the fuse block and the other going to the battery.

My concern is that the alternator wire in the kit is not heavy enough for a 100 amp alternator. So should I just run a bypass wire from the alternator to the battery, or is there a better way to wire it?

And I know some of you are saying, "Why didn't you just buy AAW?" The cost was a fraction of the price of the AAW kit, and after all the money I've spent trying to get this thing back on the road... it just seemed like a lot.

Anyway, thanks for any help you can give me.

Subscribed as I ready to install the same engine into my 72. Post some pictures of the install when you can.
Thanks!

Re: EZ Wiring Harness Help Needed

Are you making it carb intake or efi ?

Cs130 alt will need a 85 watt resistor it is not ecm controled
Here is two pigtails that will work as well as a thread on adapting a cs130

What kind of load do you anticipate running in your truck? A 100 amp alternator will never output 100 amps unless under serious load. Likely it spends it's life outputting 25-35 amps.

We once had a strippo Cavalier training car. It had a 105 amp alternator with only a 10 gauge ouput wire. It was really easy, with a battery tester, to show students a couple volts of drop on that wire when the alternator was maxed out.

Re: EZ Wiring Harness Help Needed

It's a Quadrajet carb (electric choke) and HEI distributor. I'm thinking of running the Solenoid Power wire to the battery via fusible link, and adding another wire running from the alternator to the battery with another fusible link. I'm also replacing the amperage gauge with a voltage gauge.

Although I don't plan on running any heavy loads at the present, I prefer to err on the side of caution.

Re: EZ Wiring Harness Help Needed

How about running the alternator power wire to alternator (B post I think) and solenoid power wire to the solenoid. The EZ wire instructions tell you to run a bypass wire if using an alternator rated above 80 amps. The kit includes a black wire marked bypass. There is a diagram in the instructions.

Re: EZ Wiring Harness Help Needed

I know it's not the same but on my Painless kit the alternator charge wire (I think 6 gauge) is coming off the center post of the solenoid that the battery cable attaches to. As is the 12 volt positive wire that goes to the fuse block to supply power to the truck. That wire has a maxi fuse in-line. The only other wire going to the solenoid is the purple? start wire and it's attached to one of the small studs on the solenoid.
I don't know much about fusible links but the down side is that if they go they aren't easy to replace unlike a fuse.

I've thought about using a small maxi-fuse block. I may do it that way, because I want to put a power distribution block for some solenoids near the battery. Thanks!

Re: EZ Wiring Harness Help Needed

Could you be more specific as to the guages of the wires in question? I am not familiar with your specific harness.
Although it won't directly apply to your project here is a link to how I wired a late model alternator in my Burban. I tried to post all the links that helped me. Scroll to post 467.

Re: EZ Wiring Harness Help Needed

The Solenoid Power wire is 12 gauge. The Alt Power is 14 gauge.

Thanks for the link. I had a hard time making it past the picture of the GTO Judge...

That car is perfect down to the GM seat belt instructions on the visors. That Judge color combination is really rare and beautiful too.
