sub'd

My wife has a back up camera in her Kia Soul, and I'd like to have one in the truck. I'm not going to bother with putting one on the travel trailer. The wife can guide me back. She has a rain coat if it's raining.

Re: post photos of backup camera

Here's my setup with the camera mounted above the license plate. Drilled a 3/4" hole to flush mount the camera. The image will display on the JVC touch screen head unit. The wires need to be run yet but here is my progress so far for folks that are looking for ideas.
Camera: TOPTIERPRO
Display: JVC KD-AVX77

Hey now, that is slick! If I buy that headliner with the speakers and provision for the radio, I can put a setup like that in like yours.

That's correct. Unfortunately, the JVC DK-AVX77 is no longer available to purchase brand new. The JVC KD-AVX77 was introduced in 2009 and it was discontinued sometime around 2012. It is the only 1 DIN full touch display unit.

The hyperlink leads you to Crutchfield and although the unit is not available for purchase, it provides you with specifications, a description and customer reviews which I thought folks interested would find helpful. However, if you want one, you'll need to find someone willing to part with theirs.

Re: post photos of backup camera

You can still get an JVC KD-AVX77. That's what Ebay is for. They are not cheap but can be aquired for less than a pair of tow hooks.

I removed the license plate bracket and painted it with Rustolium satin black making the camera blend in more so it's less noticable. The bracket and two hitch were already black but a primer flat black that was beginning to look chalky and aged. Both the bracket and tow hitch turned out nice with a fresh coat of paint.

Here is a picture of the camera installed. Hardly detectable unless you know to look for it, just like the third brake light under the handle of the tailgate.

I'd love to hide the tow hitch receiver behind the bumper and license plate but that's a project for another day.

Did you install a backup camera? If not, are you still considering installing one?

Re: post photos of backup camera

Was at Costco yesterday and they have a setup with a license plate frame with built in camera and a separate little 4 or 5” screen for it. Could keep it in the ash try or something. Think it was $125.

That looks like a nice option. I wish the screen was a bit bigger but I love the knob in place of touch screen / buttons.

Re: post photos of backup camera

Looking forward to seeing other backup camera setups.

After a trial run I determined that I need to make a few adjustments. The image displays automatically when reverse is selected however the top of the image is obscured by the license plate light. Will try mounting the camera so it is angled down to avoid capturing the license plate light in the display.

I'll post any improvements.

Re: post photos of backup camera

Here’s mine, it uses my phone as the monitor. Also, it’s working anytime the ignition is on. Not sure this is a feature/benefit but that what it does.

Re: post photos of backup camera

Great idea el-fantasma. Here's a camera built into a license plate frame. The camera swivels making it somewhat universal. I personally did not want a license plate frame but this might be an option for some folks. Be prepared for sticker shock- $110-150..

Re: post photos of backup camera

I used to design tools for work. They cost a fair amount of money to make, but if (for example) you avoid damaging a $250,000 wiring harness when disconnecting it, it's worth every penny of the $2000 the tool cost. It's the same for a camera. $100 is better than running over a kid, any day.

Re: post photos of backup camera

I agree that the investment of a backup camera and associated system is well worth piece of mind of avoiding a tragic mishap. The poor rear view visibility that large vehicles offer (especially our older trucks and SUVs with tiny sport mirrors), the unintended consequences when backing up these vehicles is a legitimate concern. With two little ones at home, that's my whole point of making this modification.

There are far less expensive backup cameras that offer similar final results, yet these products may not provide as much of a sleek or hidden appearance. For me, the final appearance of this project is important therefore I am willing to spend more time and money to make this setup function well yet minimize its appearance to maintain the classic originality of the vehicle.

Hopefully, sharing the products available and installation methods will help inspire ideas for the people, like us, who are passionate about these trucks/SUVs while, ultimately we improve the safety for the people and our loved ones around us.

I like the idea of using my phone as a monitor, nothing extra to install. Where did you get this? What is the make and model?

TIA
