Wood Bed Floor

What was the purpose of the optional wood beds? I've never seen a definitive answer. I assume that it was for looks as the wood would not show scratches as much as the painted steel.

Re: Wood Bed Floor

Like DeadheadNM said livestock was the reason. Straw or some type of bedding was usually put on the bed floor to prevent slipping and for the noise of animals moving around. A metal floor wouldn’t have stood up to the hooves of a large animal plus the noise factor.
