Re: Price of a paint job nowadays?

If this is going to be a daily driver, wouldn't it be cheaper to learn how to do it yourself? I can't afford to pay someone to paint my 72 burb so I'm reading up everything I can about painting and come next spring, I'm planning on doing it myself.
Just a thought,
Joe

Joe,
7 Operations in 3 years on my Wrists & Shoulders..... least to say,
THEY ARE SHOT! Even if I was able/willing to do it,
I only have 1 Garage to park the Truck in.
When I do theres 10" of room behind it and 6" in front with 12" on the Passenger side and 3' on the drivers side.
Besides, I have NO inclination to learn/take this project on.
Thats why God invented Body Men!

Besides, when I got in my Motorcycle accident in June, I sold the Bike in July and bought new seats for my Truck and the rest is earmarked for Body Work.

UPDATE 12/9/09:

Today they were "Building up" the Rotted/Rusted portion of the Driver's Side Rocker Panel where the weather strip goes at the bottom by where the Wiring for the Fuel sending unit goes. The said it was just some surface edge Rust that needed to be removed and the Metal Ridge built back up.
The rest of the panel was solid/fine.

The keep telling me this Friday, but I've got my Gut Feling,
it'll be another week or two.

UPDATE 12/14/09:

Added more pictures to the Picture Gallery today at: http://home.pon.net/wwotr/body%20work-paint

They are working on the Passenger half of the Cab, The Pass Door,
Pass Fender. They said it'll be done by Friday, but they've been saying that for the past 4 weeks.
I'm thinking more like 2-3 more weeks.

Re: Price of a paint job nowadays?

With the help of a local "Master", this "grasshopper" is doing his own. There is more work involved than I could have ever imagined for a complete strip-down to the metal, repair, fill, epoxy primer and clear coat paint for my truck. My estimate for primer, paint, filler, sandpaper, etc., is pretty close to $1K. Can't imagine what the final costs would be if I were having it done.

I can give you a pretty accurate idea.
My original Estimate for JUST BODY WORK, was $3500.00.
Once they got into it and I saw Rust, Worm Holes and shoddy Body Work from the 3 previous attempts, that estimate is now at $4500.00....
(and I've been promissed it will go NO HIGHER than that).

Next Spring/Summer when I decide to paint it, I have the option of going to Maaco which will be about $2500.00 or I can have the SAME Body Shop do the Paint which will be about ANOTHER $4500.00.
That will be for a Base/Clear Coat Exterior, SS Stripes on the Hood and the Interior Stripped/Painted.

Re: Price of a paint job nowadays?

UPDATE:
(Although this is more of a "Garage Update" then a "Truck Update").........

The Transition of the Garden Shed, into a Motorcycle Garage for the Wife is going great.
Were probably about 2 weeks from completion.
At that time, she'll be able to put her Motorcycle into HER new Garage, and the "Other Garage" will become home for "RATIKLE".

I've enclosed a few pictures of the Transformation.

Hope everyone is having a great Christmas and a Safe New Years!

Re: Price of a paint job nowadays?

Stopped by the shop and for what it's worth, I took a "walk around Video" of my Truck and posted it on my You Tube and FB page.
Since I've been posting about it for 2 Months, I thought the LEAST I could do was post the Link.

Re: Price of a paint job nowadays?

Here's my dad's 1984 GMC Sierra 3500 2wd. It has a 350 with 4bolt main and 4.11 gears. It's just about ready for paint. If u search hard enough, u can get a reasonable price with today's economy. Just make sure u find a reliable body shop- Took me over 25 years to find a great body shop! I paid close to $4,000 in parts alone- fenders, body patches, grille, weatherstrip, dash, seat cover, trim, etc. to restore this truck + body work and paint = $$$$$$$$

Re: Price of a paint job nowadays?

UPDATE:1/5/10

Well it's getting near the end.

All the Panels/Doors/Fenders/Roof/Hood/Rockers are done.
They used some "Seam Sealer" on some of the seams around the Front Window,
(see pictures at my site Link is below).
They just need to fill the Antenna hole on the Cowl piece, primer and seal it.
Then it's time to put everything back together.
Door Handles/Wipers/Tailgate/Lenses/Front & Rear Windows/Cowl all that kinda ****.

So far its been about 10 Weeks.
Took it in on October 29th 2009.
I wont go as far as to say "It'll be ready THIS Friday",
but out of all the times they've said it, this time seems to be closer than all the other "promise dates" they've made.

The fact is, that they've been doing the Body Work in their "spare time" because if an "Insurance Claim" came in, then THAT would take priority over my Truck.
Thats fine with me, (as I've said before), the "RATIKLE GARAGE" is not done yet, to bring it home to, (still about 2 more weeks on that project).
Gonna see if the Body Shop can 'hold" it until then, as I don't want to bring it Home to sit outside in the rain for 2 weeks.

As always I've posted a photo gallery at:
http://home.pon.net/wwotr/body%20work-paint

Just scroll down to "Body Work (1/5/10)".

ENJOY!!!

Re: Price of a paint job nowadays?

TOMORROW IS THE DAY!!!!!!!!!

RATIKLE comes home and gets tucked away in her new Garage, before the Storms start on Saturday.

Were supposed to get a Deluge of Rain/Wind starting Saturday night through NEXT FRIDAY! (6 days of straight rain).

So here are some pictures of the New Garage, mind you,
Most of you wont think much of it,but it's a Palace to me!

She SQUEEZES into it with:
10" to spare in the Back,
17" he Passenger Side
6" in Front
3' on the Drivers side.

So I will be backing Her in.
Who Da' Thunk that a 60' Oak Tree falling on our House in October, could have led to THIS!
No More sitting out in the Rain/Wind and Snow!

Oh did I tell you that I'm STOKED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

P.S. The Big 3 Boxes on the Back Work Bench are my Cusom Leather Bucket Seats and Console!

UPDATE...BODY WORK FINISHE...TRUCK AT HOME!!!

Brought "RATIKLE" home today. Parked her in the Garage.
There was LESS ROOM (Front to Back), and MORE ROOM (Side to Side), then we had originally measured, but she STILL fits inside.

You can go to:
http://home.pon.net/wwotr/body%20work-paint

Scroll down to "1/15/10 FINISHED" and see the Photo Gallery.
